I love all of you, but there is clearly a liberal lean on this forum. If we were all on Atlas discussing the Carter/Reagan race at this exact point in the 1980 election, how would us liberals be rationalizing Reagan's rise in the polls. Would we still be thinking that Carter could win or would we have given up by now?

Some pics to get us in the time frame

i'd say this forum is more centrist economically. probably libertarian socially though.

there's still usenet discussions from the 1984 elections iirc, but i don't think there's any from before that.

Considering this forum's demographics, there would have been many more Reagan supporters than there are Romney supporters now.

Its the day after the Presidential debate so I'd probably already be voting for Anderson or more likely Reagan.

The left didn't care much for Carter, which was one of his many issues going into the 1980 election.

As many of the above replies have insinuated, I suspect this forum would actually have been a hotbed of John Anderson support.

I'd probably be saying, "Don't worry guys, Carter will hold the south. There's no way southerners will abandon one of their own and vote for some washed up Hollywood B movie actor.

How would the debate performance be looked at?

Carter would be to 1980, as Obama is to 2012, they both lose - badly!

Guys, of course we'll say now, with hindsight, that we would have been balanced... Fact is, there is no answer. This is not testable. All we have is wishful thinking.

I have no idea... I loved Clinton, Gore, Edwards before all the crap came out about him.  Seems to me that I tend to favor Southern Dems with national appeal, have to guess I would've backed Carter.  Certainly not Reagan... I would've seen right through what that candidacy was all about.

I remember that People magazine cover. My mom loved 'Dallas', and about the only thing my parents ever talked about back then was the "Who Shot J.R." episode.

I would most likely have been really excited, and counting down the days until Election Day, eagerly awaiting to mark the box with Reagan and Bush's names on it!

1976 would have been more interesting, with all the big states being close.  Imagine having an election like that today, in which California, New York, and Texas are all swing states.

"Whoa, Reagan might win this. Dammit. There goes my 1984 speculation." (to model the mood I'd be in now if Romney were likely to win)

J.J would be ignoring everything that isn't Gallup and thinking that Reagan is going to eke out a win.

In 1980, we didn't have much more than Gallup.

The last polling was actually 3-4 point lead, and, at the time, I thought Reagan had peaked.

CA was not a swing state in 1980.
