Good Bye Demrepdan, I was going to try to stall off as long before the Senate forced me to recall you. I think that a person who's done so much for the nation deserved to be treated with more respect and loyalty than was shown.

Well, I hope that this doesn't come across as coldhearted, but there are times where you simply can't please everybody, so you just gotta do what you gotta do.  Had Demrepdan agreed to take the case, there wouldn't have been any problem.  He made a conscious decision not to do his job, and, well, there's really only one correct way to respond to that.
