I thought this would be a very fun idea and at least something we can consider implementing. Wink

Is there any reason to retain a Lieutenant Governor? Why not just specify that the person who becomes acting Governor when the Governor leaves office or is temporarily absent is the Representative who received the most first preferences in the last regularly-scheduled Assembly election?

I would not be totally opposed to such an idea.  The advantage of retaining a Lt. Gov. is so we can have an officeholder who can immediately open the assembly and allow us to elect a speaker.  Although I suppose we could simply transfer those duties to someone else.

....That's basically what we do now Nix.  Lt. Governor is the Rep receiving the most votes, and does becoming acting Governor under said circumstances.  Perhaps I'm missing your point, but it seems your only disagreement is our usage of the title.

Barnes, I understand that we don't want to blindside voters with an election the day after a vacancy, but do we really want to wait almost two weeks in the event that the position becomes vacant on a weekend.  Maybe we should try something like, "The election shall be held on the first Friday following the vacancy, except where the Friday falls within two days of the position becoming vacant, in which case..."

Just throwing it out there.  It's not a huge deal, but it is an entire week.

Actually, I originally wanted something like that to begin with but was afraid y'all would think it's too short of a period. Wink If you wouldnt mind, can you introduce the appropriate amendment?

I request a 24 hour extension of debate; I simply couldn't get in here yesterday, and there are still some things I feel we should iron out.

By the way, I just realized the Articles of our constitution are numbered incorrectly, with two Article II's.  Whoops.. An amendment;

Debate time has expired.  The Assembly will now vote on the final text.  This vote will last 24 hours, or until all members have voted.
