I think so, they in fact helped propel him to victory in 2007, because the other guy was even worse.

Yeah, Athens is in his district. I wouldn't really say that Athens "propelled him to victory", it's just that Broun's opponent in the R v. R special election runoff did everything he could to ensure he wouldn't get a single vote from Athens. IIRC, he said something to the effect of, "the University of Georgia is a liberal bastion, and the whole place should be demolished- except for the football team."

He also said he wanted to be Representative for Augusta.

Bit odd thing to say in a district that was over 50% Athens + Rural Areas not that close to Augusta.

I got thrown into the fool's district this year as well.  I recieved quite a few (uncounted) write-in votes against him from my family. Wink

But in respect to Athens, the Republicans intentionally surrounded it with a sea of Republican counties so that it can't really tip any race.

The geography pretty much forces Athens to be represented by a Republican (barring a gerrymander like the 2002 map). There's nothing but GOP strongholds in every direction. Ironically, the current map is actually about as weak as it can get for Broun- if you traded out the Atlanta exurbs for someplace like Newton/Rockdale or more of the black belt, it'd actually be a pretty marginal seat. As it is, I wouldn't be too surprised if Broun lost reelection at some point.
