I know the Hollywood producers who created this show probably thought they were filming a bunch of conservative Southern rubes that they could snicker at in prime time, but my personal hypothesis is that Mama June voted for Obama and Sugar Bear might have.

They don't seem particularly conservative on social issues. Sugar Bear works in a chalk mine, and to my knowledge the chalk industry hasn't been particularly harmed by the Obama Administration. And while he enjoys riding ATVs, guns don't seem to figure too heavily into his or the family's recreational activities. And their rather austere lifestyle suggests they are likely 47 Percenters.

Didn't her mother explicitly endorse Obama?

I believe they overtly endorsed Obama, no? I vaguely remember something to that effect.

Edit: Beaten. Yeah, they're the 15% (white Obama voters in the rural South). Someone has to be.

I'm pretty sure that Honey Boo Boo endorsed Obama, but not her parents - unless I missed another interview. Nevertheless, yes, there are Southerners that look just like that who still vote Democratic - including Obama.

So I saw this thread and was reminded of the South Park parody of them. And got thinking that their whole "Sketti and butter" thing on South Park couldn't be real. So actually its worse....

Honey Boo Boo is my favourite show. Eagerly awaiting the Christmas special.

(Alana endorsed Obama; the parents never said who they were supporting. The Thompsons aren't exceptionally hateful towards their gay family member, Uncle "Poodle," so who knows. That's not to say being anti-gay is a prerequesite for big-R Republicanism, though.)

I'd like to think they're apathetic Democrats. Somebody needs to tell them to vote; the electoral predictability in Wilkinson County is amazing.

2012:
Romney 50.47% (2246)
Obama 49.01% (2181)

2008:
McCain 50.21% (2349)
Obama 49.12% (2298)

2004:
Bush 50.09% (2261)
Kerry 49.51% (2235)

They might have voted for him, but I'd expect them to vote for Romney. The 47% issue doesn't seem to really affect poor white southerners (though it should) because they're swayed by cultural issues. The white democrats in the rural south tend to be old school yellow dogs who never switched over and your occasional eccentric liberals.

I think the mother was supporting Romney. In the Leno interview where her daughter "endorsed" Obama, she was being talked over, but when asked if she pays attention to the election coverage, she said she didn't, and didn't watch the RNC, but was aware that her candidate was tied with the Democrat.

Heh, my gracious, that's what I miss for not watching TV aside from sports and news. Smiley Might be why sports and news are pretty much all I watch on TV.

I remember a headline on CNN that "Honey Boo Boo" picked Obama - don't know that that meant an endorsement, but the parents? That's not exactly an Obama-voter profile, as that's a very common sight in West Virginia, but who knows. Can't judge a book.

That is an asterisk for one thing: Wilkinson County, GA has a large African American population.

I think they would be Republicans, but since they're uneducated and on a reality show they have to be kept shut about politics as usual, and they'd be picking a really crappy choice.

Not to mention that many of them are on government assistance.

But they hate assistance, they are on gov't assistance because they have no other choice.
