The genital mutilation, rape, random violence against the citizenry, gang wars, extreme poverty (500 gdp per capita), massive unskilled and unemployed labor force, etc. almost makes it all worth it.

Everyone loved the anarchy, that's why tens of thousands lined the streets TODAY to welcome their new government with flags and flowers [government was formed in Kenya and arrived by plane]

extreme poverty (500 gdp per capita)

That's 1991 data. There isn't any government now, so there is no one to collect statistic data. I know this guy in another forum who is somali, altough he's living in Canada, who said that for years, tehy were the ones who sent money for Somalia, but now it's their relative sin somalia who are sending money for them. His uncle, who owns a pharmacy chain in Somalia, paid for his first car and another one of his relatives there makes more money than his parents with 2 PHDs.

The 500 GDP per capita was the 2003 estimate.

I have no real comment about the Canadian on the other forum, no way to verify and it seems to clash with official sources, but whatever.  His Uncle sounds like a member of the elite in the country - owning many pharmacy stores, shrug.  Even if it were true, it still doesn't mean that there can't be extreme poverty outside of this example.

The third, fourth, and seventh pictures show women out and about.

Yes, but they're covered up in their slave garments.

Somali women do not dress like Arabs. Go read P.J. O'Rourke - he's actually been there.

And screw Somalia. I back Somaliland! Cool

I suppose the point of this is that Somalia does fine without government, and so we would too?

Thanks but no thanks, I'll take our system over their's any day.  Just because there are anecdotes of the lives the elites live doesn't mean the country is paradise.  Those pictures you have look even worse than the crappy parts of LA so don't brag too much about how great Somalia is.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic.

Bono managed to find some pictures of some structures without explosive marks or bullet holes.  That doesn't make the place even close to alright.

The Islamic militants wouldn't be too happy to see Americans.

The islamic militants once tried to take over Somalia and were crunched by the militias.

Anecdotal evidence is about as good as "estimations" made by people who don't have any familiarity with what they are calculating.
Somalia got out of a 11 years civil war after 40 years of Socialism. Of course they aren't like LA.

11 years of civil war and 40 years of socialism actually sounds a lot like LA Grin.

I do not share your contempt for widely agreed upon GDP figures.
