****Answers:****

Easy

1. What is the capital city of both England and the UK?

London, of course. Home of jellied eels, Eastenders, many corrupt politicians and all kinds of other wonderful things. Grin

2. What is the name of the current Monarch?

Elizabeth II.

3. What is the name of the current Prime Minister?

David Cameron.

4. What's the most popular sport in the UK?

Football (or soccer as our American friends call it).

5. The four countries that make up the United Kingdom are England, Scotland, Wales and....?

Northern Ireland. Or Ulster.

Fairly Easy

6. What are the names of the two Houses of Parliament?

House of Commons and House of Lords. Members of the former are elected, members of the latter are not (despite many attempts to make them so).

7. Who is Boris Johnson?

Mayor of London. Not 'Lord Mayor' as several of you put as your answer (don't worry though; it didn't cost you anything). As for the man himself, well, I describe him as having the head of a fresh cream cake from Gregg's. Tongue

8. This Englishman is a successful movie director. His filmography includes Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire. He was also the artistic director of the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. What's his name?

Danny Boyle. He's from Lancashire to be more precise.

9. Who succeeded Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister?

Sir Winston Churchill.

10. The Beatles came from what English city?

Liverpool. The 1960s was really quite an amazing time for that place; their football team (more about them later) took off too.

Medium

11. Who is the current First Minister of Scotland? Extra point for naming the party.

Alex Salmond of the Scottish National Party. Probably not for that much longer though, regardless of which way the upcoming independence referendum goes.

12. What tragic event took place on July 7th 2005?

Terrorist attacks in London.

13. What sport is most commonly played at Lords and The Oval?

Cricket. To be clear, it has nothing to do with tungsten or noisy insects.

14. The day after Christmas is usually known as what?

Boxing Day. Also 'hangover day' for many (another one of those occurs just six days later, of course).

15. What's the title of the member of the government who oversees financial and economic policy?

Chancellor of the Exchequer. As you may imagine, few people who hold this position are anything close to being popular.

Difficult

16. Who was the only Prime Minister to have been assassinated?

Spencer Perceval. Not exactly Britain's answer to JFK. John Bellingham was not pleased that the British government was refusing to grant him compensation for his imprisonment in Russia.

17. Who is the current manager of Liverpool FC?

Brendan Rodgers. Bill Shankly 2.0? We'll see.

18. What is 'toad in the hole'?

To put it simply - Yorkshire pudding filled with sausages.

19. Who challenged John Major for the Conservative Party leadership in 1995?

John Redwood. Got 89 votes out of 300 and something. Still around actually; often appears on TV to attack the current government from the Right.

20. Before the digital switchover, terrestrial television consisted of how many channels?

5; BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five.

Very difficult

21. Who led the Labour Party from 1910-1911?

George Nicoll Barnes.

22. What was the name of 'The Nine Days' Queen'?

Lady Jane Grey.

23. Jim Bowen is best known for presenting what TV game show?

Bullseye. Darts was the theme of it.

24. What county is the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch in?

Anglesey.

25. The female star of the movies Women in Love and A Touch of Class is currently an MP for what constituency?

Glenda Jackson is her name (well done to those who knew it). But the constituency she represents is Hampstead and Kilburn; formerly Hampstead and Highgate.

----

Thank you to everyone who participated, and congrats to polnut who was the highest scorer with a total of 21. Smiley

Llanfairpwll hasn't been in Gwynedd since the 90s. It is, of course, on the isle of Anglesey (also known as Ynys Môn and The Island), which is both a historic county in its own right and a contemporary local government area.

Ah right. I'll edit the answer. I must confess that that was the only question I had to research the answer for. Wikipedia can be misleading sometimes.
