A Reddit user claims he bumped into the former Republican presidential nominee at his local fill-up station last night, and posted this shaky Loch Ness monster-esque photograph to prove it. The time, location, and even the subject of the image are not fully confirmed, but it sure does look like Mitt Romney—a less neater than we're used to seeing him—filling up his car with regular unleaded. The picture was posted to the website last night around midnight and quickly zoomed to the top of the front page. The Redditor, mkb95, says the photo was snapped in his home town of La Jolla, California, where Romney does indeed own a home and is reportedly planning to settle down (retire?) following his last election defeat. He says he chatted up Romney, who was obviously without security guards or drivers, for a few minutes, before they both went on their way. The picture wasn't necessarily posted to humiliate Romney, but naturally the thread turned into a  heated political debate, combined with comments about his rather haggard looking appearance. (A few commenters even suggested a picture like this might have humanized him in a way his campaign never could.) We can sympathize with that since we certainly aren't used to looking our best when making pit stops on the road. But no matter how he looks, the picture does drive home just how quickly a major candidate can go from Secret Service entourages and a phalanx of reporters watching your every move to a completely normal life driving yourself around the suburbs. Romney is a private citizen again and it's going to take awhile for us—all of us—to get used to it.

He doesn't have a driver?  Ok... 0.1 pts for Mitt.

They're going to settle down in La Jolla?

I highly doubt that Romney doesn't have someone to pump his gas for him.

Indeed, I'm sure he has a bevy of minorities ready to serve his every need.

I would agree that it is probably not a common occurrence for him to drive his own car or (particularly) pump his own gas, but I'd guess he isn't as unfamiliar with that situation as a lot of the super rich.

I think one reason he may be sort of 'under-served' for the moment in La Jolla is reportedly the house is just a temporary one - the one which came with the lot.  They've plans to knock it down very soon and build an appropriate residence - which presumably would have more room for the necessary serviles.

I remember Mitt getting some negative press in the primary or general because he filed for permits to install an elevators for cars in his La Jolla house.

Yeah that's the house that will be built.   You can look up pics of the existing house - its just a big old over-sized ranch house really.  He probably considers it 'camping out' to stay there at all.

He looks like Scarlett's father just before his demise in the movie version of Gone With the Wind. Quite a few parallels actually.

I wonder if that's near Torie's 'hood.

It's amazing how good his hair is; disheveled and haggard, and it's still better than most people's hair.

Everything I've read about the man tells me he is personally frugal and low maintenance- it surprises me little that he doesn't have a driver

Why?  It's not as if he has anything he needs to do while being chauffeured around, so a driver would be not only an unnecessary expense, it would be a bother.  It's a lot simpler to just get into the car and drive rather than have someone else do the driving for you.

I thought you lived in New York, not New Jersey.  Unless you live in the Garden State or have a disability that makes it difficult to get in and out of your car, there is absolutely no reason to not pump your own gas.

A driver only makes sense for rich people who live in a big urban area like Manhattan where it's probably cheaper long term to hire a guy to drive your car than pay for parking.

Not for me. Private citizen is the only political office he's qualified to.

By "surprises me little" I meant it does not surprise me...
