I probably would've voted for Hiram Johnson, too (as a Republican, but not as a Progressive.)
Don't you mean Goodwin Knight?  He was the Republican candidate that year, and Earl Warren was Chief Justice.

Nobody seems to want to admit that they would've voted for Schwarzenegger (at least in the moment.)

Last two elections had absolutely horrible GOP nominees. Tbh, I can not see myself supporting a major party in CA for the next few elections at least.

Only two elections actually up during the years I lived there.  Well, only two for governor.  In November 2002 I voted for Peter Miguel Camejo.  He actually won over 5 percent of the votes that year, which is very impressive for a candidate for statewide office who isn't a Democrat or a Republican.  It probably says more about Davis than about Camejo, though.  Then in October of 2003 I voted for a gay socialist lawyer from Los Angeles for governor.  Man, I loved that election.  It had four questions.  I forget how I voted, but on each one I voted with a majority of the public.  California is the only state I've ever lived in where I generally vote with the majority on the yes/no questions.  That never happened in Massachusetts, Iowa, Mississippi, Texas, New York, or Florida.  I haven't lived in Pennsylvania long enough to find out, so I don't know if that'll be the case here.  Anyway, the first part of that ballot had four questions, one of which was something like, "Do you want to recall Gray Davis?"  The second part of the ballot had candidates that you vote for in the event that he is recalled by a majority of California voters.  There were about 125 named candidates and something like 40 legitimate write-in candidates.  165 choices for governor?!  How great is that?  There's something for everybody.  You almost never get a choice like that!  Usually there are four or five.  Or, as in the case with Pennsylvania, two.  So you have to hold your nose and pick the one you dislike the least.  But on that election there was everything from a Korean Elvis impersonator to a porn star.  I looked at the biographical sketches and answers of each one, and took it pretty seriously.  I think it was the first and only time I ever voted for a socialist for governor.  Anyway, my guy came in tenth.  10th out of 165.  Not too bad.

I'm not sure about the rest of those elections.  1946?  Who the hell knows?  I wasn't even born yet.  But I know who I actually did vote for when I was there.  And it certainly never was Gray Davis and it never was Arnold Schwarzenegger.
