If they're a Democrat, against Romney. If they're a Republican, against Obama. If they're an independent/third party, either put them as the nominee of whatever party they're closest to or have them as a third-party candidate against both Obama and Romney.

Independent changes some margins, but no states flip from vote-splitting.

I honestly would be amazed if I won a single state besides Vermont and maybe California (home state), Maryland (DC area), and Hawaii or Rhode Island (super liberal).

The Midwest doesn't take kindly to your hoity-toity elitist attitude, and the South (at least the parts that can swing) aren't fans of it either. The West doesn't like your politics much. However, you do carry states comprised of rich suburbia.

Goldwater's social liberalism allows him to overperform Romney in key swing States like NH and CO and to win commanding margins in the West. The Conservative base doesn't turn out as strongly, causing reduced margins in the South, but the moderate swing to Goldwater is much more substantial. The PV margin is strong, but the Electoral College is very close and the outcome is only known weeks after Election, when Ohio results are certified as a Goldwater win by a 0.4 points margin. The Obama team declines to challenge the numbers.

Goldwater: 50.6%, 279 EVs
Obama: 48.3%, 259

Ooh, this one is fun. I can't see a way to do this without a third-party social conservative candidate:
