Hmmm.... I have a feeling there'd be greater backlash in the South despite Scott's DLC leanings. However, he probably does better out West. Maybe something like this, with only Iowa flipping. Had you been from say, a Southern state, you'd have a real chance to improve a lot in the South.

Goldwater does better than the average Republican in New England, but does worse in the Midwest, excepting Wisconsin and Iowa (the latter of which he wins narrowly, and nearly wins Wisconsin, losing the state following a recount) and does better in the Pacific Northwest. Presenting himself as the "candidate of legalization" in Colorado helps him defeat the President there thanks to ticket-splitting on the part of upper income white voters. Goldwater does worse in the deep south than Romney, but does about the same as he did in the upper south, winning those states by smaller margins, due to his libertarianism. Obama manages a win in Missouri after two recounts there, and carries Indiana once again. Goldwater becomes the first Republican to pick up one of Maine's congressional districts, and also carries New Hampshire in a close race.
