my theory in politics is that if you're a freshman (in either chamber) that one has to realize that they do not know everything and that there are other members who have been around much longer then they have, who know a lot more than they do about the legislative process. You'll gain a lot more respect as a lawmaker as opposed to being an "advertiser". The idea is to play the hand your dealt in the committee you're assigned, learn the ropes and climb up the seniority ladder.

I despise notions like the one on daily kos where it says "sign the petition to put Elizabeth Warren on the banking committee". Why should she have any special treatment? I'd rather much have someone like Carl Levin who is liberal without apology, but is also unpretentious and low profile.
