Well? I think he could've, narrowly. But i'm conflicted, as I also think Ron Paul could've lost horribly. It's all about how he's perceived: does he define himself as a fighter for the freedoms we represent, or does Obama depict him as a grumpy old man with racist newsletters and a radical ideology?

If Ron Paul didn't even have enough support amongst conservative Republicans to win the nomination then I think it's pretty clear what would have happened once moderates and liberals had a chance to vote on him...

Ron Paul can do whatever he sets his mind to. He did not win the Republican nomination because he did not want to win the Republican nomination.

Well, there were polls that showed that, against Obama, Paul did the best other than Romney. Plus he could've effectively used the people who were against Obamacare to the advantage after his nomination. But again, I see where all the people who think he would lose CONSIDERABLY would come from.

I think those polls showing Paul doing well against Obama reflected a general level of ignorance about exactly what Paul stood for. Anecdotally, I certainly know of some Ron Paul supporters whose enthusiasm dimmed considerably when they discovered he was pro-life.
And I think his economic policies would have been sufficiently outside the mainstream that a lot of establishment Republicans would have supported him reluctantly, if at all.

no. the southern vote would collapse as the socons stay at home and it'd become a curb-stomp battle.

His whole youth appeal instantly gets destroyed the second they actually learn about him; which would end up happening if he actually got the nomination.

It would have wound up looking a lot like 1996. 1968 in a worst case scenario.

No, not this year. The GOP would not support him, and they would even fund an independent Trump bid. He could have won, if the GOP played fair. The media would ignore him even throughout the general election.

His whole youth appeal instantly gets destroyed the second they actually learn about him; which would end up happening if he actually got the nomination.
The youth vote would support him. The whole Republican party could not make the young voters "learn" about him. He still losses the youth vote, albeit narrowly, to Obama.

Overall, Paul would of won CO, NH and Nevada, but not much else. He might lose NC though. So he could not do any better than Romney, and certainly any worse.

If the Republicans nominated him, he would finish third behind Obama and a Republican running an independent campaign of some sort.

His foreign policy views alienate most Republicans.  His economic views are on the fringe and would alienate both parties.  Many interest groups would fight him tooth and nail. Banking/Finance, anyone with government contracts (military, etc), unions, neocons, seniors, etc.  Then, there's all his especially wacky views about gold and the Constitution.  There are too many people who would either be turned off or directly be damaged by his policies.  He couldn't come close to winning.

Obama would nuke him. Paul would win Wyoming, Idaho, Oklahoma, maybe Utah and Alaska. That's it.

agreed, championing popular stances like legalizing heroin and opposing socialized medicine like medicare would have really helped win over floridians. i'm sure the minority vote would have been sealed up too. ron is a very persuasive writer, no way would he say something as stupid as mexicans and blacks just want to vote for whoever gives them the most gifts.

I am pretty intrigued suddenly by what a debate between them would have looked like. Tongue   Somebody should do a TL on it.

He might have done better in Nevada, Colorado, Iowa, and New Hampshire, but he would have lost Ohio and Florida (and thus the presidency) for much the same reasons Romney lost them IRL.

Pres. Barack Obama and Vice Pres. Joe Biden (Democratic): 468 (60.7%)
Rep. Ron Paul and Gary Johnson (Republican): 70 (37.5%)

Paul gets annihilated, and his tin-foil hat wearing supporters immediately blame the Fed before calling on the Electoral College to invalidate the results and name Paul president, because liberty.
