Let's say you gave all of Cook County to the state of Indiana. How would that change the politics of each state. Obviously Illinois would become redder and Indiana would become bluer, but would the red and blue status completely flip? Or would Cook turn Indiana into just a swing state, instead of a solid blue state. At the same time, would Republicans dominate Illinois without the largest city that helps run up Democratic margins?

Even Kerry would've won Indiana with this. Illinois would become an R-leaning swing state. Romney would've won it somewhat narrowly.

Does anyone know what the results would have been like in the last 4 elections in IL and IN if this was the case?

On quick calculations, Obama would have won about 57% in IN+Cook, which is about what he got in IL. Romney would win IL without Cook County with about 51%

But would Obama still have won Illinois in 2008 without Cook? My guess is yes since he did remarkably well down state. I think Clinton would have won both Illinois and Indiana in the 92 and 96 as well.

Yes, Obama would have won, with 1,790,324 votes, or 52.8% of the vote. McCain would have received 1,543,443 votes, or 45.5% percent. Of course, had Cook County been in in Indiana, Obama would likely been a senator from Indiana and not Illinois, which changes the entire picture, but that's besides the point...

I don't think Obama could have primaried Evan Bayh in 2004 or beaten Lugar in either 2000 or 2006, so under this scenario, I can't see Obama becoming Senator, at least not in time to run for President in 2008.  Maybe Governor, but not Senator.

Well, under that scenario, I suppose than Bayh and Lugar perhaps wouldn't be senators.

Yeah, under this scenario any Dem senator from IN would have been a liberal, and it would take a lot of luck to have an entrenched Republican senator from the state. So, no Lugar or Bayh
