2012 is drawing to an end and hence it's time to retrospect this music year.
12 songs made it to the top of the Billboard Top 100 this year.
Which is your favorite #1 hit?

Of these, Kelly Clarkson's "Stronger". "Call Me Maybe" a close second.

I would say Somebody That I Used To Know, but We Found Love by Rihanna really pumped up at clubs so I'm going to go with that.

Call Me Maybe is one of the greatest pieces of music ever produced.

You aint missin' much at all. As usual, anything worth hearing has to be searched out and found; the radio is a desolate land of bubblegum nonsense and generic hip-hop. </hipstermoment>

Like 'em or hate 'em, it's kind of hard to call the Fun or Gotye songs either of those things.

Lots of 1980s, some Jazz, and occasionally Classical (piano) for me. Don't know a single one of those! Well, maybe "We Are Young," which I think was pretty much ubiquitous this past summer.

Pittsburgh has a great classic Top 40 station that's now playing holiday classics, so that's what's on in the car.

Gotye's voice reminds me of Ozzy Osbourne's, so I'll go with that.

My only exposure to most of these is as background music at the gym and other public places (I haven't once heard any of them voluntarily). I suppose I have the least visceral hatred for "Call Me Maybe" out of all of these, though that isn't saying much.

STIUTK. All the others are various shades of terrible.

I don't know one of these songs.  Sad

The fun. song listed here is demonstrative of how much they've sold out to the pop scene. Some Nights was decent, but We Are Young was trash.

Also, what's with the massive popularity in the past few years of break-up songs? At least 5 or 6 of those 12 are break-up songs, more than any other type.

Set Fire to the Rain.

Although most of my favorite songs released this year are from Canadian artists.

wow, what an amazingly sh**tty group of "artists".  When and what was the last quality song to hit #1?  I'll take really anything that isn't "pop", dance or urban.

Looks like Coldplay, for one week, in June of '09.  Nickleback had a #1 at the end of '01.  Creed, Matchbox Twenty and Santana all had hits in '00.  So, for the last 12 years there have been 5 non pop, dance or urban bands/dudes hit the number 1 spot...and 3 of those are jokes and most of those were over a decade ago.  Sad.

Of course popular music usually sucks, at least in the past the rock bands were competitive.

Most are terrible, a couple* are merely uninteresting / okay to hear, self-evidently not worth seeking out. Eh. It's pop.
Besides, nobody buys singles any more, and infinitely fewer people buy new mainstream albums either, so all these charts have become quite meaningless.

*Swift, Adele; Jepsen if we're trying to be generous.

[ hipster ] Whilst clearly not his best song, [ / hipster] "Somebody That I Used To Know" is the obviously choice.

These three are essentially tied for me, but if I had to rank them:

1. Call Me Maybe
2. Somebody That I Used To Know
3. Sexy and I Know It
