anyone know why the map was such a blatant dem gerrymander when it was done by the courts? Using the geography and population of the 1970s districts it seems apparent that John Porter and John Fary would have gotten the ax. Instead what they did was to elongate all the city districts into the suburbs.

On a 2-1 vote, The Judges approved a map drafted by Michael Madigan instead of drawing their own map.

Porter was paired with Yates and Porter said he'd run in the same district as McClory (who stepped aside).

Yeah, Dems got really lucky with this map.  Not only did it eliminate Republican incumbents, but it also strengthened Marty Russo, who had a won a heavily Republican district in 1974 and held it.
