Well, if the Democrats wanted enough, for sure than those taxes would go up.

I doubt than Democrats would accept a deal without them and there would be tax hikes if there is none, under the fiscal cliff.

It says they'll be getting the extra revenue from closing off loopholes instead of raising rates. A lot of Republicans can get behind that. I know I will.

The obstructionist "block everything" mentality didn't make Obama a one-term President, so naturally the GOP Congressional leadership will be acting like adults now.

Perhaps the Dems can counter by promising $800 billion in savings by targeting "waste, fraud, and abuse."

He's still not conceding on rates, though (even as Coburn is).

And he still needs to get enough Republicans to sign onto it too.

When does the new Congress select its speaker? After a statement like that, I wouldn't be surprised to a see a coup. And why does Boehner have to be so snarky and unlikable? Do Republicans find that appealing?

I still think bipartisanship in DC all depends on Reid killing the filibuster.   Boehner's in the history books right now and he's going after the Tea Party because he's currently the least effective Speaker of the House on record and he knows that needs to change.  He'll work with Obama this term.

However, the minority leader of the Senate has no legacy until the win the majority.  McConnell's still going to be a huge ass the rest of the way in hopes of scoring big in midterms.  You can already see the rift between the two forming on working with the President or remaining obstructionist in what we are hearing of these meetings between the two parties.

At least had a reason other than "intentionally not doing anything."

It isn't just that though, its a complete change in strategy for Obama. Instead of negotiating with himself over and over again and watching Republicans slap him in the face, he's actually doing what regular people do in negotiation: you bring an offer, they bring an offer, you find a middle ground.

Congratulations, Obama and Republicans: you've finally learned Clinton-era logic.

Obstructionist "block everything" mentality? If the public really wanted more Obama Policies the R's would not'have gained 64 seats in the US House in 2010. If without gerrymandering aftet the 2010 the R's would be a slight minority in the House.

No, I don't think that's it.  It's more a case of, the tax rates are going to go up anyway if the GOP refuses to make a deal.  So their only hope of winning any policy concessions they want is to be willing to deal.  But Boehner's problem here is that he risks a conservative insurrection if he cuts a deal with Obama, even if the deal is in the interests of conservative public policy!

Jonathan Chait has done some good writing on this point:

Yeah it'd be pretty hard for the GOP to explain to voters why the held tax cuts for the middle and lower classes hostage to secure them for the rich. Before November they would've been willing to try that, but it's obvious that talking about "job creators" is not going to work now.

House Republicans never blocked anything in the first place.

They passed excellent bipartisan legislation like the Budget Control Act.
