Since not everyone follows the Italy 2013 thread (for some silly reason Tongue), here you go - http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/09/world/europe/italian-prime-minister-mario-monti-to-resign.html?hp&_r=0

He's very unlikely to be returned to power.

Well, your title is a tad misleading.

The appropriate one would be "In a desperate comeback attempt, Berlusconi forces Monti to resign".

Oops. I didn't mean it like that. I'll specify "returns as a candidate."

Berlusconi seems like the biggest troll in politics ever.

It's time for a female Prime Minister.

Sadly, Italy is for now devoid of any prominent female politician.

That is sad. But If Germany could do it why not Italy.

Keep in mind that, for the last decade, the best opportunities of a political career for a woman were offered through providing Berlusconi with certain kind of "services". Not exactly the best method to recruit Prime Ministerial material... Tongue

More seriously, in a political system as sclerotic as the Italian, the insanely rigid party structures obviously have a strong bias toward old white guys.

Why not? At least she'll be a looker.

I am ready to believe "Ruby" would be a far more competent prime minister than Silvio ever was, anyways. Tongue

I'm fairly certain you can take a random drunk off the street and be reasonably confident he won't do as much damage as Berlusconi.

Russia already tried that.

Mixed results.

I'd love for Carfagna to run! But I actually was supporting a female candidate that was actually running: Giorgia Meloni. She used to be in Silvio's Cabinet. She's a critic now. She was running in the center-right primary...until Berlusconi scrapped it with the snap of a finger. Roll Eyes

Oh, and for those that suggested her, I'd love to see "Ruby" run. Wink

Silvio offered to step aside if Monti runs as the center-right candidate. Just when you think this stuff couldn't get any more bizarre...

The saddest saddest thing of it all, is that it is not completely unimaginable that he actually wins this... Sad Not likely, right, but not completely impossible...
