Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced that his cancer has returned and that he will undergo another surgery in Cuba.

Chavez, who won re-election on Oct. 7, also said for the first time that if his health were to worsen, his successor would be Vice-President Nicolas Maduro.

"We should guarantee the advance of the Bolivarian Revolution," Chavez said on television Saturday night, seated at the presidential palace with Maduro and other aides.

Oh God, I can't imagine what a mess Venezuela could become if he dies during his term...

'Returns'. Sure.

Obviously I hiope his health improves, but he should never have pretended to be recovered when he clearly wasn't even in remission.

At least if he dies we have a clear successor so there might not be excessive turmoil.

Also, IIRC, the Venezuelan constitution required a special election only like a month after the former President's death/resignation, so on that note, things might actually be pretty chaotic...

Has to make you wonder what the CIA did to him when they had him during the coup.

opebo, sometimes people just get cancer.

I don't have the very high opinion of Chavez that a lot of other leftists here and elsewhere do, but I certainly don't think he's at the level where we should consider his slow death of a wasting disease a positive good.

Cheering the news that a dictator has fallen ill and might not longer be in power is horrible now?

Chavez is a democratically elected president in a country where the opposition controls most of the media. His governing style may be authoritarian, but he is not a dictator.

I just HATE Chavez-related topics...

Why is it that there are a certain number of subjects (stuff like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Chavez, foreign intervention), which turns everybody, leftists and rightists alike into utter morons? That renders them completely oblivious to any factual evidence and make them oversimplify issues that are anything but clear-cut?

Sorry if I sound like a moderate hero, but this is true.

I'm not a fan of his politics by any standard, (indeed, had I been sufficiently politically conscious in 2002 I would have supported the coup attempt) but he's a good Catholic and I wish him good health.

Why would you support a coup against a democratically elected leader?

I'm not exactly a Chavez fan, but anybody that seriously believes he is a "dictator" (and isn't just trolling) moves up a great deal on my idiot scale. Is it the American media?

He's pretty frequently labeled as much in the American media, yeah.
