He's a Republican governor from Ohio who is supposedly hated, even though he won re-election with 58% of the vote.

Taft is hated now. He is highly unpopular; the election numbers don't mean anything because he's deteriorated in the polls since then.

That much I've heard before. I voted that the Generic Dem would win Ohio.

But what's the deal with his numbers going down?

Part of his appeal in the first place was that he came from the famous Taft family of Ohio; since the election he's been making various mistakes. IIRC, he opposed the gay marriage ban that passed overwhelmingly.
