He's running for a spot on the ticket, no doubt about it.

He's been my least favorite governor on the Dem side for awhile now...this just cements that sediment...

I don't get people who feel strongly for keeping the death penalty. I mean it's one thing to say "okay, we should leave this option open", but another thing entirely to be all "let's kill people, yeah!"

This will hurt him in a general election, however.

I wish O'Malley would govern honestly and realize he has no chance at the Presidency whatsoever. I even agree that we shouldn't have a death penalty, but I'm wondering if that's even his real position because of how clearly he wants to run.

You'd be surprised by the number of people who A) think it's a strong deterrent, B) don't realize how expensive it is, and C) believe that the criminal justice system is less prone to mistakes and much fairer than it actually is. People who embrace A in particular can be quite fervent in their support for state-sanctioned executions.

The irony is that because of how expensive it is, we could lock up more dangerous criminals with the same amount of money (in addition to those currently executed) if we did abolish abolish the death penalty. Many of those on death row opposed Prop. 34 because it would have spent less on lawyers for them.

Can cement be considered a sediment, though?  Obviously one is naturally occurring and the other is man-made, but technically both are made from broken down bits of rock that are chemically stuck together, so I suppose you have a point.

He pushed strongly for death penalty abolition in 2009, but it fell short in the Senate.  This is not a new position.

I haven't watched his speech, but from what I've heard, you are one of the few.

If he gets this done in Maryland I would definitely consider him a more interesting candidate...

I don't find O'Malley impressive at all.  He'd likely bumble a la Dukakis on this issue when asked on the national stage.

O'Malley's also adding gun control to the legislative agenda:

Maryland almost passed an assault weapons ban in 2007.

Damn, Joe Republic already took the rock joke...

Wonder if Hilary can take one for the team and delay her candidacy announcement as much as possible, so governors with O'Malley's aspirations (no more than 3, but still) appeal to the left for as long as possible. Good policy is not judged by the sincerity of its implementors.

Because when someone commits heinous murder, as many Marylanders do, they should be dealt severe punishment.

We have de-facto repeal here anyway thanks to O'Malley's stupid law which makes it almost impossible to use the death penalty.  I think there must be video tape evidence to even have a chance

A bill that would repeal the death penalty in Maryland will go before the state legislature this week:

How good of a chance does this have of passing? I know little to nothing about Maryland's legislature.

The death penalty doesn't keep awake at night, but I'm for its removal just for the reason that its horribly inefficient and I hated seeing that GOP crowd cheer on the policy. It should be amusing to see just how left O'Malley goes over the next couple years to help his slim odds at the presidency.
