The extent of the defeat of the initiative seems surprising. I would have expected that at least a few Upper Peninsula counties would have voted yes.

University students are usually not very concerned with collective bargaining. Just like poor minorities are generally not very concerned with renewable energy.
And it was still the third best county for this initiative.

Wow I didn't notice that Washtenaw voted no. Even without University students I would have thought it would still pass Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti are half the county population and both liberal.

This measure would have won if it didn't outlaw strikes by public workers.

Have you even read it? It doesn't ban public employees from striking, but it just says that the option to ban them from striking is there.
