On the Republican side, the Ames Straw Poll is coming up, many Republicans are situating themselves to try to gain some momentum there. Even though Governor Branstad tried to get rid of it, he ultimately dropped the affair. The main contenders right now for the Ames Straw Poll currently are Rick Santorum, Paul Ryan, and Tom Coburn, with a slight chance of a strong write-in showing from Mike Pence, who has explored the possibility of entering the race. Marco Rubio has his name in the Straw Poll, but is not too seriously contesting it. Chris Christie asked his name not be on the ballot completely, as has Condoleezza Rice.

On the Democratic side, Deval Patrick has been attempting to build a stronghold in New Hampshire, as shown by his constantly improved standing in the state. Biden, the ever continuing front-runner, has been fading as of late due to campaign gaffes and a lack of endorsement from the Obama White House. Cuomo, looking to take the front-runner mantle, has many liberals afraid, with Brian Schweitzer and Russ Feingold endorsing Warren fairly early in the race. Finally, Kathleen Sebelius and Rahm Emanuel entered the race a little while ago to fairly little fan-fair, though both are taking aim at Iowa and South Carolina at the moment.

Damon slams Democratic field, weighs in on Presidential Run!

"None of these people are the reason why I became a Democrat. The only person in the field I could see voting for is Warren, and even then, she's not the fighter for the middle class that I've seen her be in the Senate. It's almost enough to make me want to run for President or something... and it's starting to be a serious possibility."

National Polls w/Damon:
Matt Damon: 22%
Andrew Cuomo: 15%
Joe Biden: 12%
Elizabeth Warren: 9%
Martin O'Malley: 9%
Deval Patrick: 7%
Kirsten Gillibrand: 4%
Kathleen Sebelius: 2%
Rahm Emanuel: 1%
Undecided: 19%

Biden, Emanuel attack Damon

"He's a fine actor, sure, but what does he know about the policies, what does he understand about how government works, where are his credentials? You don't go to a job interview to be a CEO of an Engineering Company when your experience is as a top chef! If he wants to join the field, I'll get him, but may I remind you, I'm the one that understands the way things are!"

Gregory: "What are your thoughts on Damon's comments in the past couple of days?"
Emanuel: "Well, I mean, I like his movies."
Gregory: "Anything else?"
Emanuel: "Well, not really, because he's not a serious person. It's easy to criticize someone when you aren't in that position to be making all those decisions. It's much harder to actually make those decisions"
Gregory: "So basically you're saying it's irrelevant because you actually govern and he doesnt?"
Emanuel: "Exactly, now lets get back to seriousness."

Meanwhile, on the Republican Side

Pence, Perry out; Sandoval in!

"As much as I love the nationwide enthusiasm for my running, I will not be running for President, as I care too deeply about the people of Indiana to be distracted by a Presidential run. I will, however, be running for re-election in my home state of Indiana. Also, I will be endorsing Senator Coburn of Oklahoma, as he has proven himself in his career as a legislative mind to be the sharpest, hardest working, and most conservative man in the Senate, and deserves a chance at the Presidency!"

"I will be announcing my official retirement from politics, as I feel I no longer have a role to play in the national scope of the United States, and I will be ending my campaign for President. I will be endorsing my good friend Bobby Jindal for President of the United States, as he has the vision, and candor, to be the President."

"After 8 years of Hope and Change, it's time to turn around from this crash course of Democratic leadership, and I think my view is so much different than the GOP field that I will be announcing my run for the Presidency of the United States!"

National Polls:
Marco Rubio: 19%
Chris Christie: 18%
Paul Ryan: 12%
Bobby Jindal: 12%
Condoleezza Rice: 6%
Tom Coburn: 5%
John Thune: 3%
Rick Santorum: 3%
Brian Sandoval: 2%

Debates Coming...

Sebelius, Patrick calls for a more knowledgeable field, back up Damon

"I know many of my peers are rudely dismissing Mr. Damons remarks, but that doesn't make them any less true. We need to be more knowledgeable on the policy so we can have a serious conversation with the American people, not just talk down to them like children. As someone who worked in the Health and Human Services department of the Obama administration, I believe we need an educated discussion on Heath Care, and hope my peers can follow up."

"What Joe Biden and Rahm Emanuel said about Matt Damon fundamentally disrespects the people of this nation. So what he doesn't have experience? He has a right to criticize the Government as much as anyone else does, and we should listen. We are the party of the people, and yet they talk like Plutocratic Republicans, these are not the men who should lead the free world, much less our party!"

Bill Clinton holds massive, $3 Million dollar fundraiser for Andrew Cuomo

National Polls:
Andrew Cuomo: 20%

Democratic Debate Results:

Who won?
Deval Patrick: 35%
Kathleen Sebelius: 13%
Andrew Cuomo: 10%
Rahm Emanuel: 8%
Kirsten Gillibrand: 8%
Elizabeth Warren: 8%
Martin O'Malley: 3%
Joe Biden: 0%
Tie: 5%
Undecided: 10%

Deval Patrick tears down the field, Sebelius and Cuomo impress, Biden collapses

Biden, who usually stands tall at debates, has completely sunk. He looked sullen, angry, and a bit out of sorts. Other than his performance, most of the candidates did rather well, with Kathleen Sebelius getting massive applause on the healthcare issue. However, the person who overtook everyone on the field was, surprisingly, Deval Patrick, who managed to upgrade the conversation to a bigger level. Cuomo also had his moments, but he mostly stayed out of the spotlight of the debate.

Post-Debate Democratic National Poll:
Andrew Cuomo: 21%
Joe Biden: 14%
Elizabeth Warren: 14%
Deval Patrick: 11%
Martin O'Malley: 8%
Kathleen Sebelius: 7%
Kirsten Gillibrand: 4%
Rahm Emanuel: 4%
Undecided: 17%

Republican Debate Results:

Who won?
Condoleezza Rice: 20%
Chris Christie: 15%
Tom Coburn: 13%
John Thune: 9%
Brian Sandoval: 8%
Paul Ryan: 6%
Marco Rubio: 3%
Bobby Jindal: 1%
Tie: 10%
Undecided: 15%

Condoleeza Rice wins narrowly over Christie and Coburn, with Thune and Sandoval impressing.

On the Republican side, it was a bit less decisive, with Condoleezza Rice's foreign policy credentials completely trouncing everyone else on the stage, while sounding polished enough on everything else. Christie came on strong and fast, and managed to attack without sounding petulant. Rubio, however, couldn't do the same, whose bad performance tonight is only matched by Bobby Jindal, who collapsed on substance in a near Rick Perry fashion. The only other surprise was that Paul Ryan faltered a bit on budgetary matters, his supposed strength. Rick Santorum wasn't invited due to polling below 3%.

Post-Debate Republican Poll:
Chris Christie: 22%
Marco Rubio: 14%
Paul Ryan: 11%
Bobby Jindal: 10%
Condoleezza Rice: 9%
Tom Coburn: 8%
John Thune: 5%
Brian Sandoval: 5%
Rick Santorum: 1%
Undecided: 15%

Comeback Biden!

"What'd I tell ya?"

Who won the Debate?
Joe Biden: 30%
Deval Patrick: 18%
Kathleen Sebelius: 10%
Rahm Emanuel: 8%
Andrew Cuomo: 7%
Martin O'Malley: 7%
Elizabeth Warren: 6%
Matt Damon: 3%
Tie: 1%
Undecided: 10%

Biden came out sounding polished, smooth, and yet came on aggressive. It was his best debate performance since scalding VP candidate Paul Ryan back in 2012. He crushed the field, with higher class debaters Sebelius and Patrick coming with their usual skill on the issues. Emanuel impressed some on the debate stage, but mostly was a non-factor, much like Cuomo, O'Malley, and Warren. Damon was the one who fell: he looked more and more like the inexperienced political that Biden had pointed out he was. At many points he just lacked the detail that any of the other candidates had.

National Polls:
Andrew Cuomo: 20%
Matt Damon: 16%
Joe Biden: 16%
Deval Patrick: 14%
Elizabeth Warren: 11%
Kathleen Sebelius: 8%
Martin O'Malley: 6%
Rahm Emanuel: 4%
Undecided: 5%

Christie v. Thune

Who Won?
Chris Christie: 24%
John Thune: 20%
Tom Coburn: 13%
Condoleezza Rice: 10%
Brian Sandoval: 10%
Bobby Jindal: 6%
Marco Rubio: 6%
Paul Ryan: 4%

On the Republican side, Chris Christie won the debate, though voters said that John Thune did a massively more impressive job than they expected. Tom Coburn, who had needed a debate win to keep his fundraising together, came in third, with many voters saying he was stronger on fiscal issues than he was on foreign policy, in which he bungled a few details. Opposite of Condoleezza Rice, of course, whose stronger points are on foreign policy. Sandoval sounded knowledgeable but boring, and didn't stand out too much to people who weren't paying as much attention. Rubio and Jindal's numbers look bad, but they really just performed averagely, so their numbers represent that, and didn't stand out at all in the night. The only bad performance was Paul Ryan, who was attacked by Chris Christie over his budget plan, and he wasn't able to explain it, again.

National Polls:
Chris Christie: 24%
Bobby Jindal: 15%
Condoleezza Rice: 11%
Paul Ryan: 11%
Tom Coburn: 8%
John Thune: 8%
Brian Sandoval: 4%
Marco Rubio: 4%

Meanwhile, on the Republican side...

Coburn surge in Iowa, Ryan sinks

In spite of his lack of regular funds, his retail politician approach in Iowa has endeared him a 78/15 approval among the states Republicans. While his numbers drop elsewhere, he ssees a surge of support in the state. Meanwhile, Ryan has busied himself with a negative ad war with Bobby Jindal, and has upped his negatives up to 44/45. This, along with his poor debate performances, have sunk him in the state. Jindal is still in the positive, with 58/24 approval among state Republicans, but he hasn't made much of a budge in numbers in the state.

Jindal's best performance, contentious with Coburn

Who Won the Third Debate?
Bobby Jindal: 25%
Tom Coburn: 22%
Chris Christie: 10%
Brian Sandoval: 10%
Condoleezza Rice: 10%
John Thune: 10%
Paul Ryan: 6%
Tie: 3%
Undecided: 4%

Jindal came out of the debate with easily the best performance of his career. He clearly practiced, and came off like a President. Coburn came second with the strong policy knowledge, and the rest of the field was flailing behind. Christie, Sandoval, Rice, Thune didn't say much that was notable, and Ryan scrambled for the third time in a row.

National:
Chris Christie: 23%
Bobby Jindal: 21%
Tom Coburn: 12%
Condoleezza Rice: 10%
Paul Ryan: 8%
John Thune: 8%
Brian Sandoval: 6%
Undecided: 12%

Comeback Biden faced some stiff competition

Who Won the Third Debate?
Joe Biden: 20%
Rahm Emanuel: 19%
Matt Damon: 18%
Andrew Cuomo: 12%
Deval Patrick: 10%
Kathleen Sebelius: 9%
Elizabeth Warren: 2%
Martin O'Malley: 2%
Tie: 3%
Undecided: 5%

There was definitely a top tier in this debate: Rahm Emanuel, Joe Biden, and Matt Damon, and while Biden won the debate, Emanuel and Damon were the most impressive of the bunch, considering their previous performances on the debate stage. Cuomo, Sebelius, and Patrick performed respectably, but not really well, and Warren and O'Malley crashed. Their campaigns after this debate performance look a bit closer to done than not so.

National:
Joe Biden: 18%
Matt Damon: 18%
Andrew Cuomo: 18%
Deval Patrick: 15%
Elizabeth Warren: 9%
Kathleen Sebelius: 9%
Rahm Emanuel: 7%
Martin O'Malley: 4%
Undecided: 2%

Statement from the Christie Campaign

"We at the Christie Campaign are happy with the result, as we expected much worse. Getting double digits in a state we put no resources in is a strong result, as our true first state is New Hampshire."

Paul Ryan withdraws, endorses Jindal

"Iowa was our first and our last shot, if we didn't make it here, we weren't going to make it elsewhere, so I am dropping my Presidential Campaign and endorsing my good friend, Bobby Jindal, who I hope will be able to turn out this race and turn America around!"

"If you told us we were going to be second in Iowa, I would've laughed at you, but now this is a serious campaign, and we are moving forward, continuing the tradition of President Obama!"

Damon Campaign Statement:

"The results are in in Iowa and frankly, we don't really have much interest. We invested in the people of all the states, not just Iowa and the early states, so our campaign continues in spite of what the pundits may have to say on this matter. It's not an issue to us."

O'Malley drops out, endorses Biden

"It's time for me to face reality and end this presidential campaign. I realize the best candidate is the one who advocates change, but also who implements it. I might support Rice too, if not for President, then for the Senate. The Republican party needs a token... foreign policy expert. But she is the only Republican running who might get my support in the general election.
