Gohmert continues his tradition of making batsh**t crazy statements. I think he should be kept away from guns.

If she had known how and was ready to use it, then sure.   Maybe an environment where a principal or other leaders/teachers have a gun isn't the type of school we want to create, but it might have saved some lives.

So we put an M4 rifle in every principal's office.

Now the crazy kid doesn't even have to bring his own gun to commit mass murder. He can get one AT school and use that one.

Exactly. The kid didn't even own any guns and tried unsuccessfully to buy one. It was only because his mother was a gun nut that he was able to pull this off.

Why don't we arm the students as well, while we're at it?

Careful, Landslide Lyndon asked the same question in the breaking news thread and got chased out of town by a mob with pitchforks, and then had a FF/HP poll made about him.

Personally, I think that princpal's offices should be equipped with mini-nukes. The threat of nuclear annihilation should be a sufficient enoug deterrent to scare off any potential spree-killer.

Then I suppose I'll have to arm myself with a pitchfork as well to fight back.

The sad part is that him coming out with this piece of odious insanity is not even so much as a mild surprise.

The death toll might indeed conceivably have been somewhat lower had more people involved had had guns. It might also have been considerably higher. It is, however, a nearly absolute certainty that the death toll would have been somewhere between much lower and non-existent had nobody involved had a gun.

That's interesting. When President William McKinley was shot dead, the solution Congress enacted was to surround his successor with good guys with guns, and not to simply pretend that nobody involved will have a gun.

An M4 of course is not the optimal weapon for this situation.

We should not be having shootouts in schools and universities or movie halls. We should not expect to be transported back to the wild west every time we step out of the safety of our homes.

You think the school faculty would have just sit idly by while some unarmed demented kid stole their weapon?

Combination of WTF? and hell no. Really, right to carry is more than enough, something I would like to see ended. There are places in America where if you started stocking M4s, about once a week after that became the norm you'd have the gunfight at the OK Corral. And having vacationed out West a few times, I can say that there are geographic areas in the country that absolutely love and almost glorify their history of showdowns and gunfights.

Who said anything like that?

Over 60 years later, when Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy was shot dead, the solution Congress enacted was to surround his successor with good guys with guns, and not to simply pretend that nobody involved will have a gun.

I'm curious as to why neither Congress enacted the Nathan solution.

Wasn't there another Kennedy who got shot? What was his name? It was something like James or John or something like that.

Yes, there was. The conclusion of such was that the Secret Service was incapable of adequately protecting the US President from sniper fire.  The result was surrounding his successor with more good guys with more and better guns; they are called the Counter Sniper Unit.

I sure wouldn't trust some of my school principals with a gun.

I heard that one time back about 60 years ago, an elementary school principal in my area shaved the heads of every male student because he was tired of them looking like "beatniks." When the father of one of the students showed up at the school to complain, the principal pulled a gun on him.

Good, although I wasn't implying anything about their legal status, just that throwing more guns into an already violence-prone, trigger-happy society would be an outrageously awful idea. It would be interesting to see a social experiment here where we started celebrating discoveries and contributions to knowledge over war heroes, shootouts, cop shows, beatdowns, etc.

It's impossible to predict when these things will happen and there is absolutely nothing that can be done to stop them, so you can't answer this with any certainty.
