An interesting fact I noticed just now is that there will be a 12 year difference between the Dean of the Senate (Inouye) and the 2nd longest serving member (Leahy), with an additional two years between Inouye and the senior Republican.  That is the largest disparity ever, as far as I can tell.

In the House it's a 10 year difference between Dingell and Conyers, and 16 years between Dingell and Bill Young.  The longest seems to be the 12 year difference in 1993 between Jamie Whitten and Jack Brooks, both of whom retired in 1994.

Well, the Senate disparity no longer exists, but the one in the House still does.

Another interesting facet of the new Senate will be the huge disparity between Brian Schatz, the Senior Senator, and Mazie Hirono, the Junior Senator, in Hawaii. Schatz was born in 1972, while Hirono was born in 1947 and actually elected by Hawaiian voters, yet she'll be lower in precedence than a man young enough to be her son.

I don't think there has ever been another situation that dramatic before, but I could be incorrect.

And now, with Inouye's death, disparity between Leahy (1975) and Lugar (1977) are just two years (won't change after January 3, as Hatch's was also elected in 1977).
