For John McCain to be questioning Chuck Hagel's Republican credentials seems a bit rich.

McCain makes Romney seem like a man with deeply held convictions.

McCain just continues his ridiculous bitterness.  I have no doubt in my mind Hagel would have been his choice for Defense or State if he had won in 2008.

That is an absurd statement- though no surprise coming from you...
Say what you want about John McCain- one thing that can NOT be said is that he does not have core beliefs which he sticks by and fights for

Pre-2008 McCain, maybe.

McCain fell apart pandering after the economic collapse.

I don't know. If I remember correctly, Hagel wouldn't endorse him in 2008.

I see why McCain would be against Hagel. On most issues, they agree, but McCain and Hagel are polar opposites on foreign policy.

McCain didn't lose his dignity in a POW camp in Vietnam, he lost it running for President.

Amusing considering that McCain and Hagel used to be friends. McCain just wants revenge after his colleague endorsed his opponent in 2008. That and Hagel seems to show a modicum of sanity with regard to foreign policy.

It would truly be a shame if his nomination didn't go through.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

President Obama had better stand by Chuck Hagel, or he will be revealed as a walk-over if he lets Republicans have their way with his nomination picks a second time.

If President Obama backs down from him, I will lose all respect for him.  And if Hagel fails to be confirmed, I very well may leave the party.

I fully expect the GOP to suggest a sitting senator in order to open up a seat for themselves. And Obama will do whatever they say.

They're are wanting Michele Flournoy, actually.

Seriously, now that Obama has given up on Rice, with whom he is much closer, I wouldn't be surprised if he drops Hagel too. It sucks, because with his re-election out of the way, I had hoped that he would stop tip toeing around worthless McConnell and fight for what he wants.

Those hoping for a more assertive Obama in a second term are probably going to be very disappointed.

I'm with some of those above. I don't know if there was a cave over Susan Rice (considering Kerry being an excellent choice as well), but President Obama had better get his first choice at Defense confirmed. It's totally unacceptable to allow the opposition to choose the Cabinet. I'll lose a lot of confidence in him if he doesn't fight for his first choices for his own Cabinet.

It would be nice of course to know if Hagel is indeed Obama's first choice. The administration has been completely silent on that matter (unlike with Rice). For all we know, floating out Hagel's name might be a courtesy towards him while Obama weighs his choice between Flournoy and Carter.

Let's not forget that most people say that a huge organization like the DoD needs more an administrator/manager in charge (like Pannetta was) than a big policy guy like Hagel.

Hagel still sucks even though some of the Israel lobby isn't happy with him.

The main problem I see with the Hagel nomination is it that means there is no chance of dealing with the next manufactured fiscal crisis before we reach it.  Not that there was much of a chance of doing so, but if effort was spent on it now, then they would have a better chance of not kicking the can again.
