Nah, but their views are so unbalanced and insensitive towards the problems guns cause that I gotta say HPs.

I would like them if they spent their money on pro gun causes instead of building a luxury office building with a shower in the director’s office.

I prefer Gun Owners of America, or the Second Amendment Foundation.

I've no problem with guns rights organizations existing, of course, but even setting aside the NRA's more lobbyist tendencies, I dislike the NRA's habit of talking out of both sides of their mouth. They claim over and over again that they don't mind simple and basic gun laws, or even inherently oppose new gun restrictions, but they sensationalize against them literally every time, anyway.

The NRA does not advocate on behalf of gun owners in America, it advocates on behalf of gun manufacturers. HP.

This, basically. I have never seen a gun regulation they were in support of.

My opinion of that organization has been lowered a peg or two.  The NRA has made a grave mistake making such an uncompromising announcement this past Friday, and refusing to take part in Vice-President Biden's gun panel.  They would have been much better served had they been more conciliatory, and if someone overhauled their PR department.

Politics is war by other means, they'll say whatever is necessary to keep gun sales as high as possible and gun regulations as lax as possible. Strangely enough these shootings and the reaction play a role in accomplishing these objectives.

Am I too cynical?

Have to agree with that. They feed people paranoia, and what they do is hugely different from advocating the right to keep a pistol in one's night table for protection.

Regardless of their reasons, the gun nuts are currently doing more to advocate for improved mental health care than most so-called progressives.

Exactly.  The NRA basically boils down to a trade association.  Ultimately, they're the lobbing arm of an industry and they care about selling their products.  They have no interest in protecting innocent people.  It's sad because they were originally a group of people that enjoyed a hobby.

I think America needs to do to the gun industry what it did to the Hummer car brand, associated it with dudes who are overcompensating for having a small weiner.
