My fellow Americans tonight I want to speak to you about Peace in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. Yesterday at 7:00 hrs. Paris time a major breakthrough was reached in the Peace Negotiations between this great nation, South Vietnam, and North Vietnam.

These negotiators on behalf of these governments have a concluded a complete cease-fire and an end to American involvement in Vietnam. Ambassador Lodge on this Administration's behalf has agreed to ending all Naval and Aerial bombardment of North Vietnam. In return, the troops of Ho Chi Minh have agreed to a complete withdraw from South Vietnam within the next 90 days. Within the next 90 days all American POW's being detained in Vietnam will be released and brought home to their families in the United States, and during the same 90 days all remaining 535,000 U.S. military personnel and combat troops will also be returned home to their families back home in the United States. Breaking News:Vice President Humphrey Resigns from him position. Humphrey announces that one month ago he was diagnosed with cancer, and that he will be leaving to seek long term treatment at the Mayo Clinic. He will attending be attending the Democratic Convention in Chicago.

Pres. Johnson and Gov. Connally meet with Sen. Robert Kennedy and Sen. Edward Kennedy about the prospect of one the Kennedy Brothers taking the newly available  V.P. Spot. Johnson does not want Robert Kennedy to enter the primaries because Johnson is still running. Considering Edward's youth and inexperience Johnson reluctantly and nervously offers Robert Kennedy the post of Vice-President. Robert is reconsidering entering the 1968 race because of the cease-fire and because all troops will returning home by the beginning of July. Robert Kennedy bitterly accepts Johnson's offer because Johnson promises to give him complete power over all domestic policy and that an All-Volunteer Army policy will be initiated, and Selective Service will be disbanded by the end of 1970. Connally and the Texas Delegation promise Kennedy their full and complete support for his Presidential Campaign in 1972, as does L.B.J.

Robert Kennedy is sworn in as the new Vice-President of the United States. That night the new Democratic Ticket of Johnson and Kennedy wins by a landslide in the California Primary. McCarty withdraws from the Presidential Race the next morning, and endorses Johnson.

Breaking News: The last of the remaining Military Forces and P.O.W.S. will be returned to the United States. All will be received by their friends and families at the Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas on today 07/18/68.

Pres. Johnson initiates Operation Homecoming at the White House where himself and his Cabinet wil receive all returning soldiers from Vietnam and their families. A special Texas Barbecue lunch will be served.

Absolutely impossible.  Johnson loathed Bobby Kennedy.  There is no way he would ever make him Vice President, not even if the only alternative was to leave the post vacant.

Breaking News: George Wallace withdraws his candidacy and endorses the Republican Ticket.

At the the Republican National Convention, Nixon is nominated on the first ballot and chooses Gov. Agnew of Maryland as his running-mate.
Nixon attacks both the President and Vice-President on endless fronts. Nixon accuses Johnson of cut and running on Vietnam, that he is way too soft on crime, that the Vice-President is giving a slap in the face to the memory of his brother Pres. John Kennedy, that Johnson only ended the war to gain political leverage, that he only choosed Bobby Kennedy as his running mate so he would no longer interfere with Johnson's endless thirst for power.

At the Democratic National Convention. As in real life there are large demonstrations and violence. Pres. Johnson is hit in the face with a rock. He sustains a small slash across his cheek and a black eye. Many Yippies scream at Vice-President Kennedy call him a traitor, an Uncle Tom, a liar, and a disgrace to Pres. Kennedy's memory and legacy. Robert and Ethel also have red paint thrown on them.
Gov. Connally renominates Pres. Johnson and Sen. Edward Kennedy renominates his older brother. They are both nominated on the second ballot.

Pres. Johnson speaks in praise of all the military forces that previously returned home from harms way in Vietnam during the last few months. He proclaims that we are closer to racial equality and social justice in America than we ever have been. He affirms with the help of the new President the Democratic Party is just as strong and united as it was in 1960 and 1964.

At his acceptance speech Bobby Kennedy gives a very solemn, piercing, and some would say angry speech. Him and Ethel are still wearing their red paint stained clothes on as Vice-Pres Kennedy speaks. "In 1963, my late brother Pres.Kennedy was covered in red by the bullets of an assassin, and tonight my wife and I were attacked with red paint by a monstrous and unruly crowd. Before taking this office, I believed after we withdrew from Vietnam that all this madness and war at home would stop in its tracks. God how wrong I was! We have ended the war in Vietnam, and now we must stop the war at home with full energy. Tonight I stand more firmly behind Pres. Johnson than I ever have before. Richard Nixon said I'm a slap in the face to my brother's memory and he is completely wrong, and on the first Tuesday in November we are going to give Mr. Nixon a slap in the face he will never forget the size of Florida.

Breaking News: Pres. Johnson beats Fmr. Vice-Pres. Nixon by one of the narrowest of margins in U.S. Presidential History. Johnson/Kennedy wins 280 Electoral Votes, and Nixon/Agnew wins 258 Electoral Votes.

Johnson wins his home state of Texas. The Democratic ticket also wins Alaska, Hawaii, D.C., Delaware, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesotta, Michigan, West Virginia, Washington, again Texas, Rhoe Island, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Missouri. The Democrats win 280 Electoral Votes.
Nixon wins his home state of California. The Republican ticket also Oregon, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Indiana, again California, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The Republicans win 258 Electoral Votes.
