Who do you think the contenders will be for the next Democratic Speaker of the House? Assume the Democrats take back the House in 2016 or 2018.

Is this excluding Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer?

I'd say Xavier Beccera D-CA 31st or Chris Van Hollen D-MD 8th.

It will certainly be Nancy Pelosi if it happen in '14 or '16. If not, then...
I'd say Xavier Beccera D-CA 31st or Chris Van Hollen D-MD 8th.

My gut feeling is Hoyer or Clyburn, though Clyburn seems to have been forgotten about...

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a strong contender.

Clyburn was born the same year Nancy was.

Pelosi and Clyburn aren't too old. They'll probably both retire by 2020, but that's still 8 years away.

If the Democrats take back the House in 2016, then maybe Pelosi. If Hillary runs for president and wins and the Democrats take back the House, Pelosi would want to be included in history with the first female president and female Speaker of the House in power.  If it's 2018 or beyond, it's probably Van Hollen, Wasserman Schultz, or Beccera.

I would personally hope for DWS since she has the support of moderates and liberals alike within the House caucus plus she would arguably have the best standing with the remaining Bluedog's. I wouldn't see her running though.

The Speakership would probably end up going to Beccera, Van Hollen or maybe Israel. Hoyer, Lewis, and Clyburn strike me as guys who don't want to have to deal with overseeing an exhausting madhouse and I see them passing it off to someone younger.

I think the next big opportunity for Democrats will be in 2018 for the House. I think if they lose the Senate, they will probably retake it if they win the White House and don't think they will win the Senate without the White House and vice versa. If they do well in 2016, it will be hard to imagine a Democratic Majority in the House for years. I mean, the last time it took the Democrats 12 years and it took the Republicans 40 but I think that was mostly because of conservative democrats inflating their numbers.

Why would DWS have any appeal to moderates or blue dogs?

She's a more relatively moderate liberal as opposed to Pelosi or Becerra plus DWS is one of the few members of the House Democratic leadership that's a member of the centrist New Democrat Coalition. She would definitely have a better connection with the Cooper's and Schrader's than Pelosi ever would.

Here are the current and recent former members of leadership (including chief deputy whips) who are fairly young (let me know if I missed anyone):
Chief Deputy Whips Terri Sewell, Diana DeGette, Keith Ellison, Ben Ray Lujan
DCCC Chair Steve Israel, Caucus Vice-Chairman Joe Crowley (5th ranking Dem), Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (4th ranking Dem)
Former DCCC Chair and current Budget Committee Chairman Chris Van Hollen
DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman-Schultz

I agree that (outside of Hoyer and Clyburn) Van Hollen, Becerra, and probably DWS have the best shot, but anyone think any of these other names have a shot?

If it happens by the early 2020's, probably Becerra.  The best chance IMO would be 2018 with an unpopular GOP president.  However, because I think the most likely outcome is a moderate Hillary win in 2016 (but not enough to swing the house) and a loss in 2020, I actually think the next Dem speaker of the house will be someone not yet in office, coming into power in the mid-late 2030's.

I agree with this, but more like mid-late 2020's.

Pelosi... she strikes as one of those "lifers"

If not Pelosi... I'm hoping it'll be Israel, because he's more local to where I live... but I'm guessing it'll be Becerra (though I would prefer Joaquin Castro)
