Im surprised Saratoga County, New York(where I live) isnt on there.  Im pretty sure that FDR never won it and that LBJ was the first Democrat to ever carry it.

Landon did carry Saratoga County, getting 56 per cent of the vote there. He carried 49 of the 57 upstate counties, losing only Albany, Clinton, Erie, Monroe, Montgomery, Rockland, Schenectady and Sullivan. I actually find it somewhat surprising that despite FDR being from upstate New York, he fared rather badly upstate. I guess the home state status thing didn't mean much then, as he lost upstate all four times.

And yes, Lyndon Johnson was the first Democrat to carry not only Saratoga County but about 30 or so other upstate counties. And one book stated that he was the first Democrat to carry *400* New England towns. Was Barry Goldwater really this disliked in this region with counties and towns that FDR couldn't get 30% of the vote in 1936?

I also find Landon's rather poor performance in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Ohio rather surprising, too. Why did he do rather poorly in strongly Republican counties in those states while doing so well in upstate New York and New England (he "only" got 51.4% of the vote in Lancaster County, for example)?

Wow, Eastern Tennessee/Kentucky have actually trended Democratic in recent years?

Also, surprised about Lancaster. What % did Johnson get in 1964?
