Well, I think that cardigans are just very very versatile, they can bee worn over a shirt or t shirt, under a sportscoat or suit for a more casual look. I really like them. I think I'm going to get some more at uniqlo when I get back, if I can budget it, I'll go for a little shopping spree there.

I really like uniqlo, it's high quality stuff for good prices. I have a good peacoat from them, and then a nice pair of corduroy trousers. I'd like to get another cardigan or two, a jacket, some sweaters, I don't know.

Speaking of things I want, I'll be needing a flat cap sometime soon, as you can see by my post in papoy.

I'm hoping to get a nice green,  and a grey.  Maybe a red or a tan after that. Tan cardigan, dark green or blue tie, and black pants
 Smart look.

Am I the only home that recycles outfits?

I am a huge thrifter, opebo! I have a very nice pair of khaki chinos from Brooks Brothers I picked up for a whopping $5. There's a great pair of blue seersucker J. Crew trousers I had for $15, a nice Huntsman sportscoat for $35, and even the uniqlo peacoat was thrifted for $30. I almost got a tuxedo, but I left it and when I returned it was taken.

My wife purchased me a flat cap a few months back. Now I wear it virtually any time I'm not in work attire.

Do you wear a fedora when you're in work attire? Tongue Well, I can dream. I'd have much respect for a person who could pull off a fedora or similar.

I mean, though, is there any other kind of suitable hat to wear? I'm at a loss, don't want a baseball cap or toque. A nice drivers cap seems the only option.

All good stuff in this tread. I got a nice Barbour jacket for Christmas. Now I'm a real man. I also recommend wearing bright colored pants.

What exactly is a Barbour jacket? I tried looking it up on Google but got different results. I have a pair of bright orange J. Crew bermudas, but otherwise I try to keep it muted, at least during the winter. I've always associated red chinos with Italians, actually. I might try- uh, what's it called again? The stitched together fabric of disparate, highly coloured patterns? The super preppy ones?

Speaking of super preppy, when I first got to college, back in August, so many people were wearing Brooks Brothers polos. So many. I felt practically plebian with my Ralph Laurens.

Ties for proles.

A character from this decent film called Looper called ties "a 20th century affectation". I'm inclined to agree.

I still approve of suits, blazers and the like. I'm just waiting for the day when the tie is not an obligatory part of formal wear.

Oh unhappy day!

I recall the time I explained the practical benefits of wearing bow ties to Lief.
  • They don't get in your way like long ties- hence why they're associated with doctors and professors, because who wants to get your tie covered in blood or chalk? When I'm doing homework this is a great help.
  • In that vein, you don't have to untie them multiple times when you get the length wrong- just some horizontal fiddling.
  • Tied correctly, you don't actually feel it or see it-  forget it's there.
  • When you get the hang of it, it takes no longer to tie than a normal tie, which works out, for me, to be just as long as it takes for my tea to steep every morning.
  • They don't get caught in anything.

Of course, these are all benefits of not wearing ties at all, but hey, same could be said of dressing up in general.

Excellent clothes related news, guys! I just picked up an excellent, top notch classic shawl lapel dinner jacket at the local thrift store for $25! The original price? Just under $2,000.

Now, I need to find the matching trousers- I went to the Paul Stuart store for to look at them (and, honestly, for them to re-bag it, which they did wonderfully with a proper hanger and zippered bag- it looks like I bought it there) and it cost about $400, which means it's out of the question. I'll probably go back and look again to see if they have it. Then, I need to get a cummerbund (went to Brooks Brothers to find a waistcoat initially, and didn't like the selection), which I recall seeing at another thrift store, then some braces (preferably in pink), the bow tie, of course, and perhaps most challengingly, studs and cufflinks.

In other words, dressing fantastically needn't be expensive, and, more importantly, thrift stores are awesome. Cheesy

I like the v-neck sweater with a plaid shirt underneath look. One of my favorites for this trying season of the year.

I'm glad you approve. There's a yellow and blue plaid Polo shirt I have that I like wearing with that sweater. Which is nice. But so, so many people here wear Brooks Brothers. Makes me feel proletarian in comparison. That's also the only real v-neck sweater I own. I really want to go out and get them in more colours- say, a nice grey, a salmon, a rust, a green, nice, rustic colours. Still really working things out.

You know, I bought a couple of shirts from Charles Tyrwhitt a couple of months ago, and I'm beginning to have mixed feelings about them. They're dress shirts, and I can't help but feel like I'm doing something wrong when wearing them. I feel as if a broadcloth shirt in the same colours would be better suited. I'm considering exchanging them, but I don't quite want to part with them. Not sure what to do. It's a rather bad problem, lack of clothes. Here I am with a certain someone... in cargo pants.

I hate it's so warm here right now. I can't wear any of my sweaters. Sad

You could always lend them to me. Smiley

Haha, I thought you meant this kind of polo shirt and I was really confused because I didn't know they made plaid versions of that. I could see that looking very good with a blue v-neck sweater.

I like to match it with my tan corduroys.

I have a red, light blue, and grey v neck sweater. I'm trying to add to that, but the weather won't allow such things. Maybe I can rent out all of my sweaters to those who need them.

Well, I'm broke, so...

I'm not fond of all the snow we're getting now, but now it's the perfect weather for hoodies! I hate it when it's too cold to snow and you have to wear a bulky jacket (I wear my hoodie underneath still) but when it gets too hot to wear a hoodie (though I always wear a hoodie to work since when it's really hot outside they turn the AC WAY up inside.) Not being able to wear a hoodie is the worst.
