From what I remember, school killings are very rare in Sweden - much like in Austria where the last school killing was 18 years ago (slightly before the gun law was heavily tightened).

From what I remember, school killings are very rare in Sweden - much like in Austria where the last school killing was 18 years ago (slightly before the gun law was heavily tightened).

Did some research:

Since 1900, there have been 5 incidents in Austrian schools which resulted in someone being dead.

In all 5 cases, 1 person was killed (in 1 case, it was the attacker).

4 of the 5 cases took place in Lower Austria and 1 in Vienna.

In 4, a gun was used and a knife in the other one.

...

An "American-style" planned (mass) school murder never took place though:

* In 1 case, a student was caught smoking by the headmaster on the school ground. Student pulled a gun and shot the headmaster.

* In another case, a student wanted to rape a girl at school. A teacher saw it, the student pulled a gun and killed the teacher.

* In another case, a student argued with a girl at school and stabbed her to death.

* In another case, a 40-year old father abducted his son from school and shot him before crashing with his car into a tree (which he survived) and then shot himself in the head.

Finally, even the top Green politicians in the countries most affected seem to "get it".

Days after Romson cried while announcing that Sweden is bursting and needs to shut its doors, even some top Austrian Greens like Peter Pilz (!) and Gabi Moser (!) are now calling for upper limits and flawless registrations of refugees at the border:

New developments in Sweden ... as the Moderate Party collapses, the Sweden Democrats reach a new record high in the new Sentio poll out today and are now the largest party in Sweden ahead of the Social Democrats:

July poll vs. June poll

Sverigedemokraterna 26,8 (25,0)
Socialdemokraterna 22,4 (24,7)
Moderaterna 12,7 (15,9)
Centerpartiet 11,6 (11,2)
Vänsterpartiet 9,2 (7,9)
“Liberalerna” 5,7 (4,2)
Kristdemokraterna 3,8 (3,5)
Miljöpartiet 3,8 (3,1)
Fi 1,8 (2,5)
Piratpartiet 1,2 (1,1)

And even the worst polls for SD now give them a support of around 20 percent.

I guess by "worst" you mean the phone polls ... Tongue

In fact, online panel pollsters like Sentio and YouGov predicted the SD share most accurately back in 2014, while phone pollsters vastly underestimated them.

Still a long way to go though. But the traditional "people's parties" seem to be under significant pressure right now and bleeding tons of voters to the SD. We'll see what happens there next year. Maybe the centrist parties will make some sort of comeback like the ÖVP ... (or not).

Rumours that the government will resign later today in response to the announcement that the right will vote no confidence for three of Löfven's cabinet ministers.

Prime minister Löfven calling an early election is also another thing that is being rumoured.

Shocked

How long would it roughly take until the new election is held ?

The Swedish IT-scandal is very similar to the Austrian scandal about the glue that didn't stick on the absentee ballots last year:

Like in Sweden, government-related stuff (in this case, the printing of postal ballots) was outsourced to a private company.

After the debacle, the printing of postal ballots was re-nationalized again and the ballots are now printed by the state printery again, like decades ago.
