Every person who was on a major party ticket in that election lost a Presidential election at some point in their life.

Yes just useless trivia, but still interesting.

And 3 of them were right in a row including 1976.  Ford in 76, Carter in 80 and Mondale in 84. It took ubtil 96 for Dole to become the nominee.

Perhaps one of the more interesting things about the 1976 election, apart from the fact that the incumbent had never been elected to either Pres for VP, a first. One thing that didn't change was that the GOP ticket contained a Nixon, a Bush, or a Dole-- true of every GOP ticket 1952-2004 with the sole exception of 1964.

And you can extend it to 1980 when 3 out of the 4 were presidential campaign losers (Carter, Mondale, and Bush).

And that election marked the only time New Mexico didn't vote for the popular vote winner.

I don't know if this would count, but would Reagan's loss in the 1968 primaries qualify him to be a loser of a Presidential election?
