Freedom Fighter because he wins elections for the Democrats. Word is now he's seriously looking at a run against Gillibrand in 2008.

The Democrats could have run ANYONE last election, and they still would have managed 60+% of the vote.  That says less about Faso than it did Spitzer.

Yes, but Weld would've done far better.

true.  Nominating Faso was incredibly dumb for the GOP.

Was the seat going to be winnable for the GOP anyway?

It seems like the same situation with the 2006 Gubernatorial race. I understand that people liked Weld and wanted him as the nominee but throwing a tantrum because Weld didn't get the...uh..."opportunity" to get demolished by Spitzer is really immature.

If not, it's pretty pathetic, since there is really no reason the GOP shouldn't be able to hold every seat in New York that voted for Bush, even worse if it's lost to and held by a liberal. The equivalent of a seat in the Deep South that voted for Kerry being lost to and held by a conservative Republican.

It gives off the appearance that the state GOP is now instep with the national GOP in moving to the right.  Weld would have also gotten demolished by Spitzer.  However, many NY Republicans, especially downstate Republicans fit the mold of a bullmoose and andrew berger.  An already pissed off group at the shift in the GOP.  A Weld nomination would have givem at least some sign of hope for that group as far as moderation coming from the GOP on the state level.  The Faso nomination, just gives those in the moose & berger wing of the party all the more reason to totally jump ship and lose the little remaining faith they had in the GOP.

It also signals to Independents in the area, who aren't exactly fond of the national GOP's hard right shift that the state GOP is exactly the same.

Phil, you know how much I admire Weld but as the campaign went on I discovered that Weld would be wasted in such a race and became apathetic.

It would've been a shame to have seen a great man like Bill Weld destroyed in such a landslide.
