I want Mandel or DeWine to run and primary Kasich to save the seat for the GOP.

Oldies... that's the surest way to guarantee the GOP loses the seat. DeWine and Kasich hate each other and have hated each other for some time. It would rip the state GOP into two opposing camps and make sure whoever wins alienates the other's supporters.

Mandel would simply get destroyed. There was a point in the senate race last fall when he was arguing that the Asian carp problem was Obama's fault.

Kasich is by far the best chance the GOP has to hold the seat, even with Senate Bill 5. Like him or hate him, he's actually done things as governor and has some supporters in key places. Kasich will be a tough opponent for any of these Democrats.
Then why are his job approval numbers so rotten?

According to the most recent PPP poll in Ohio, he's at a 45-40 spread, definitely not bad and far better than he was at the beginning of last year. Not to mention he led a 'generic Democrat' 44-43, for what that counts.

They're definitely not rotten, though there may be some room for improvement.

It looks like the party is edging Sutton to look into some of the non-Gubernatorial statewide races.

The link goes directly back to this thread. Huh
