Mormons as a whole tend to probably go eighty odd percent republican. But it seems that (at least in Utah) it varies by location. There seems to be some of a disconnect between Salt Lake County and neighboring Utah County. One of the reasons Matheson held on was that his district was still half in Salt Lake County where (at least I read this) that there were some older mormons (who probably remembered his father) who didn't reasonate with his opponent (who wore her identity on her sleeve and was a convert). She was also from Utah County. Do some mormons in Salt Lake City view the ones in Utah County the same way Jews in Manhattan would view Jews in Kiryas Joel?

Salt Lake, and maybe Summit Counties are some of the few places in Utah where moderate, or even liberal Mormons exist.

However, Utah County is one of the most fiercely SoCon places in the Country, with the Mormons there being extremely religious, and arguably even more republican than their statewide counterparts. I actually drove through Orem a couple months ago and saw a billboard that showed a picture of a woman who looked like she was struggling with depression, with the text accompanying it saying "HAVE YOU LOST FAITH IN GOD? CONTACT US."

Outside of Utah, Mormons are generally conservative as well, but liberal ones can be found.

Not quite that extreme, but basically yes. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Mormons outside of Utah and Idaho are relatively less Republican.

When I was growing up, we had neighbors who were very liberal Mormons. They were the only people in our neighborhood who had a Kerry/Edwards sign in their front yard in 2004. Our evangelical Christian neighbors just took that as more proof that Mormonism is a deviant religion that isn't really Christian.

If it's the one I'm thinking of (Luz Robles, of course), then I hope she can become your Congresswoman in 2014. And I hope that I can get a better Congresscritter in UT-04. And I hope I had a million dollars. Tongue

The mean, hardscrabble streets of a golf course community in the Houston suburbs.

By the way, American Samoa is 25% Mormon, and apparently votes overwhelmingly Democratic, for what that's worth. Also has a non-voting Rep who is LDS, for that matter.
