CONNECTICUT -
50 years ago: Griswold, Hartford, Windsor Locks, Sprague, Enfield
now: Hartford, Bloomfield

MAINE -
50 years ago: Biddeford, Lewiston, Frenchville, Grand Isle
now: Portland, Madawaska, Van Buren, Orono, Bar Harbor

MASSACHUSETTS -
50 years ago: Chelsea, Lawrence, Blackstone, Chicopee, Fall River
now: Amherst, Provincetown, Cambridge, Northampton, Leverett

NEW HAMPSHIRE -
50 years ago: Somersworth, Allenstown, Newmarket, Greenville, Manchester
now: Hanover, Durham, Keene

RHODE ISLAND
I don't have R.I. statistics yet

VERMONT
50 years ago: Winooski, West Rutland, Swanton, Norton
now: Putney, Marlboro, Norwich, Burlington, Brattleboro

The one common denominator with those towns 50 years ago was that all of them had large Catholic majorities (except Chelsea, which was about 55% Jewish and 40% Catholic), and most of them were factory towns.

Anyone care to fill in what the most Republican towns in each of the six New England states are today? Of course, listing the most Republican towns in New England from 50 years ago would be rather redundant due to the sheer number of 70%+ GOP towns that existed then.
