Much has been made of the Republican inability to appeal to Hispanics, but IIRC Hispanics have lower incomes than whites.

For example in 2011, per capita income was:
Whites: $32 673
Hispanic: $15 479

This leads me to believe at least part of the racial voting patterns in the USA are proxies for income. How do you think Hispanics would vote if they earned like whites?

Hispanics appear to be voting based on income to a much greater degree than Whites, according to exit polls.

Well, if you have very little money and would not be able to obtain things like housing or medical care without government assistance, you'd be a fool to vote for the party that wants to take those things away from you. If you're an ambitious, capable type, you'll work your way up the socioeconomic ladder and then either continue to vote Democratic or do what most self-made whites do and adopt an "I've got mine. Screw the rest of you" mentality.

But most poor people will always be poor. That's the case even in a very mobile society. The ugly truth that most Republicans won't admit is that we do need the government to take care of the "losers" of society (because otherwise, no one else will).

In 2004, it's likely that all the difference in voting patterns between Whites and Hispanics could be explained by income. Things have changed since then.

How much of the current difference can be explained by non-economic factors?

I think Hispanics should be voting about 60-40 Democrat if we just look at income. Of course, Asians should be voting Republican if we just look at income.
