I personally think it's a rather hackneyed question, but I saw the topic discussed in another forum and I thought the responses were interesting.

Is it New York? Long history as an immigrant gateway
California? More Americans live there than any other state, most US media originates there
Ohio? Quintessential mom and pop, middle American swing state
Texas?  Main exporter of the American cowboy and rugged individualism
Illinois? Racial demographics match the entire country's very closely
Virginia? Mother of presidents and founding fathers
Alaska? The last frontier

Hard to say.

In the minds of most Americans, Iowa.

In reality, probably Virginia is the state that most closely resembles the country.

California.

The America of the 21st century will look more like California demographically.

I initially said Ohio because they have voted for every person to win the presidential election since 1964, but they obviously haven't voted the same way as the rest of the country in all those elections because Gore won the popular vote in 2000 and they voted for Bush.

The only state that has voted the same as the country as a whole since 1980 is New Mexico.  So they get my vote.

I'd say... Penn. Two big, ethnically, business-ey, diverse, liberal cities, and severely conservative  Germanic-Dutch ruralities

Illinois's demographics most closely resemble the country as a whole.

Virginia. Home state of so many Presidents. First to elect a black man as Governor. Close to the US average in the Presidential vote in the last four elections (although Colorado might be closer). Straddles three cultural regions of America -- the Northeast, the Mountain South, and the Confederate core.  Close to the ethnic mix of America as a whole (although Florida might be closer).
