Historically and politically, Virginia.

Culturally, California (Hollywood, Silicon Valley, etc. are all based in California, making it the primary exporter of culture in the U.S.).

Guys, it is, as Ben Louden taught us - New York.  Follow the Money.  America is Wall Street, and the Twin Towers really were the symbol of the world-under-the-thumb.

California has a bit of everything. Small towns, big cities, rural areas, huge range of landscape, huge diversity of people.

Let me try to ranks states and DC as microcosms of America:

1. Virginia
2. Ohio
3. Florida
4. Colorado
5. Nevada
6. Arizona
7. Texas

LEAST:

51. DC
50. Hawaii
49. Vermont
48. Alaska
47. Oklahoma
(Tie) 46. North Dakota, South Dakota
