republicans at that time were in favor of horrible things like tariffs, income taxes, suspending civil liberties...well i guess they are still in favor of the last one.

Well, I guess if WalterMitty can use a Republican avatar, you can use a Democratic avatar. Tongue

No. Lincoln's views were those of the GOP at that time.

So you say Lincoln is an abortion supporter, against the death penalty, in favor of gay marriages, in favor of 80% taxes, wants to yield national law to international law, will support Kyoto?

You're nuts.

It's kind of silly to apply today's standards for Republicanism to a Republican who lived 140 years ago.  If Abraham Lincoln was a Republican today, would he be a RINO?  Maybe.  Was Abraham Lincoln a RINO 140 years ago?  No.

He'd probably be with Barbara Boxer challenging the recount in Ohio.

Lincoln was from the moderate wing of the party when he was nominated (as opposed to, say, Seward).  If he had lived into Reconstruction, his moderate streak would have come out even more.

But he certainly wasn't a donkey in elephant's clothing...so no.

He was the first Republican President.  A case can be made that he set the standard for being a Republican and all since then who fail to meet it are RINOs.

Abraham "The Bastard" Lincoln? Of course! Everybody knows that Strom Thurmund is the paragon of the quintessential Republican, and Lincoln's oppression of South Carolina clearly disqualifies him from Republican status.

Yeah, I agree. Lincoln was the only Republican President ever.
Well, maybe Eisenhower as well. Hayes. Teddy Roosevelt. You get the picture. Smiley

Lincoln didn't oppress the south. As much as Lincoln oppressed the north.
