Listen folks. We need any here who have not voted to vote. This is the last day of voting, and the results are insane to the extreme. While I won't give away the results, if the poll expires with its current numbers, we could have a serious crisis, the likes of which Atlamerica has not yet seen before and will, God-willing, never see again.

Chafin's winning?

Seriously, though, I'm assuming hung EC? Maybe hiding the results isn't such a good idea...

Four-way tie?

Let's do this!

What would happen in the event of a four-way tie? Would all the liberals try to rally around one candidate, and if so, who?

A four-way electoral college tie would be a big constitutional crisis because the 12th amendment states that the house shall decide between the top three EV winners. No mention of how a tie for third would be dealt with. One of my favorite obscure constitutional facts.

And the polls are closed! Three way tie for first place between La Follette, Underwood, and Debs. We shall proceed to a House election.

Wow, 1 vote away from a 4-way tie.

I guess the question here is how the popular vote translate into electoral votes.

I really regret voting for LaFollete now. I did it as a tactical thing cause I thought it was going to be a contest btw him and Underwood. But if I hadn't Debs would be the clear winner (altho he might not have been elected by the House, but still).

To avoid nasty screwups like this in the future, how about we don't keep the results all locked away in a big scary box?

I actually like this approach.  More realistic.

Seconded. And I hate the prospect of tactical voting based on us knowing the current results.

But in the absence of polls or other measures of support that would exist in a real election, I think that may be more realistic...

The closest thin you'll get to a poll are the comments. The frequency of comments did suggest a tight race.

So, the "polls" (comments) showed Roosevelt leading with 30.8%, Underwood and La Follette tied at 26.9%, and Debs trailing badly with 15.40%. So Roosevelt voters were horribly "overpolled" and Debs voters were horribly "underpolled," while Underwood and LaFollette voters were within the "margin of error." Take that as you will.

The 1912 United States Presidential Election
The closest election in the history of the United States, the popular vote results would practically be a four-way tie. Nevertheless, in the electoral college, President La Follette would come in first. Despite that, with no electoral majority, the election would go to the House of Representatives.

President Robert La Follette (Republican-Wisconsin)/Vice President Albert B. Cummins (Republican-Iowa) 188 electoral votes, 25.4% of the popular vote
Congressman Oscar W. Underwood (Democrat-Alabama)/Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives James Beauchamp "Champ" Clark (Democrat-Missouri) 178 electoral votes, 25.4% of the popular vote
Mr. Eugene V. Debs (Socialist-Indiana)/Mayor Emil Seidel (Socialist-Wisconsin) 120 electoral votes, 25.4% of the popular
Former President Theodore Roosevelt (Progressive-New York)/Governor Hiram W. Johnson (Progressive-California) 45 electoral votes, 23.7% of the popular vote
