I guess he finally reconciled himself to the fact that -like it or not- Barack Obama will be his President until the end of their terms in office in January 2017.  Regardless of what he might think of Obama at a personal level, I take it McCain decided he might as well do something constructive while he is still in a position to.

I didn't watch the video, but the article has no quotes from McCain referring to citizenship, just legal status. The two are not the same thing. But this McCain gem was revealing:
"Look at the last election. Look at the last election. We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours, for a variety of reasons, and we've got to understand that."

Good, though I'll believe it when I see it.

Immigration isn't a huge issue for me, but the idea of this Congress actually passing a major piece of legislation for the President to sign should be enticing for all of us.

I like how the top two threads on this boards are this one and another one about how GOP leaders insist there is no need for a change of position on issues. The GOP has always been at war with EastAsia.

How is this surprising?  McCain has always supported this as part of a comprehensive plan - the only exception being that he said he wanted to "secure the border" first at a time that the political reality meant it had no chance of passing anyway and he needed to win some primaries.

I'm just surprised that there might be a plan considered this year.

It likely won't be signed before this December, but it's good news anyway.

True, I didn't expect anything to be brought forward on this so soon - at least not for a few months.
