Underwood. If I was a South Carolina legislator, I'd be a Democrat, and I'd probably want to keep the gravy train going.

BTW, if there is no majority on this ballot I assume another vote is necessary? The House vote requires absolute majority.

Maybe the top two then have a runoff? I'm not an expert on constitutional-crisis scenarios.

The House would deadlock and we'd choose between the top two running mates. Of course, given the three-way tie, I'm not sure how that would work...

The same way how one can get 42% of the popular vote yet get a majority of the EC, I guess the winner would get a majority if states. Unless you'd prefer it some other way?

Well, that's because, in normal presidential elections, we considered the forum vote as being the popular vote, and then projected EC results based on that. But in the House, there is no Popular vote. Of course, a candidate can win an absolute majority of State delegations with only a plurality of Representatives, but that's not an especially likely scenario.

If a candidate wins a plurality of Representatives and is strong in the smaller states, it is likely. But I fear Debs may have a geographic advantage in this case with his strength in the smaller states of the West.

You still have 1924!

Oh please, Underwood benefited from hacks too.

Quite. I have a few in mind.

In any case, a run-off may occur, since it's close. Regardless, La Follette will likely win.

Ugh, just give it to La Follette. It's time to move on. Besides, the Debs people won't back Underwood.

You think Underwood can beat La Follette in a one-on-one matchup? Let's just have La Follette win by the narrowest of margins, like Hayes in OTL 1876 but with less corruption.

I ask, dear Alfred, what in my post indicated a belief that Underwood would somehow magically win?

In any case, here's what I'm thinking for the House vote:

1912 U.S. House Vote
Despite over a quarter of the popular vote in the election, Mr. Debs failed to gain much support in the House. The President, despite his past bad relations with Congress, was nonetheless able to win a majority of the states' delegations. Meanwhile, in the Senate, Vice President Cummins was easily re-elected. In all irony, Speaker of the House Clark had managed neither to deliver the House nor the Senate for his party.

President Robert La Follette (Republican-Wisconsin) 25 states
Congressman Oscar W. Underwood (Democrat-Alabama) 13 states
Mr. Eugene V. Debs (Socialist-Indiana) 10 states
