Season 4 was fantastic, way better than the slog that most of season 2 and all of season 3 was.

Season 4 was AMAZING

I was foolishly hoping the season 4 would be a resolution of the story. Now we have to wait yet another year...

Season 5 was announced months ago lol

I thought of him as more of a Marco Rubio or Justin Trudeau.

I mean he was supposed to come off as a Republican JFK, but his platform and background (military directly after law school around the time of 9/11) screamed Cotton to me. Basically if you transplanted Tom Cotton to a NE state you'd get Conway.

I had better things to do during the entire year in between seasons than keeping a track on this.

Kay, bold precition for Season 5:

Underwood is somehow reelected and then all the s**t he made is starting to come back. But he'll die at the right time, just like Urquhart.

I mean, wouldn't you like to see Claire at the Oval?

What was the deal with Doug guilt-creepin on the transplant widow?

Oh and I don't get what Leanne's friend's data operation was all about, and how it was helping them.

The show is steadily getting worse.  I'm just not much of a fan of completely implausible political dramas.  Probably why I don't like this year's election season either.

I'm only halfway done with the season, but I'm getting bored now.

The first half was great with the drama between Frank and Claire, but now that they're back together all the tension has evaporated.

Which is good because the tension between them was based on total BS character assassinations. The show's much better when they're trying to conquer the world together.

I just don't find their Republican opponent to be a very compelling character or foe to them.

I liked her a lot more before this season.  She used to show glimpses of humanity and compassion.  Not anymore!

It's not about humanity, it's about whether a character is interesting or now.

A fairly minor idea, but from a point of view of secondary characters, I do find the Underwood White House personnel and cabinet interesting to some level, and serving as a decent contrast to Urquhart's staff (especially because they actually have time to do some level of development, unlike the original series).

In that regard, I found it curious that they managed to get some minor details, plot points or traits from To Play the King and The Final Cut into this season, despite how different both plots are by this point. For example, giving some of Tom Makepeace's traits and plot points to Durant (the proper parallel as Secretary of State/Foreign Sec), some of the King to Heather Dunbar (at least until Dunbar slowly begins to be corrupted herself), some of Stamper and Harding into Sharp and Danton, some of Geoffrey Booza-Pitt/Claire Carlsen into Seth Grayson (which probably gives a clue to Grayson's eventual future), having an attack on the PM/President, and the most tempting one, the war on ICO being a possible counterpart to Urquhart's intervention in Cyprus. If Season Five is the last one, I think Kalwejt prediction is the likely outcome.

If one suspends disbelief and accepts Claire's "rise" (While I thought her manipulation of Blythe fun, I rather disliked that she would go for VP, it makes little sense and the show itself points out, it's sheer dumb and insane political suicide), the show has gotten a lot better than Season 2 and 3. Underwood is not and will never be Francis Urquhart, but you can't say it's not fun to watch.

EDIT: Also, Petrov is probably the most fun character to watch, I enjoy it when he makes Underwood's life harder than usual.

Urquhart, as portrated by Ian Richardson, was a very Shakespearean character, which would be hard to translate into American ground.

As a character, I take Urquhart over Underwood any time, but one thing must be admitted that the original HoC was essentially one-man play with other characters being a mere props and in many cases not very developed ones. Roger O'Neil was just a pathetic drug addict, while Russo was more complex. Elizabeth was pretty much a Lady Macbeth in modern costume and American Stamper is far more developed than the original one, although it was delightful to watch Colin Jeavons's creepy performance.

Good analogy with King/Dunbar. Both strikes me as very well-meaning but not competent in political play, although Dundar seems a little more adept in this regard.

Of course another difference from the British series is that the wife of the protagonist (antagonist if you like) has played a major role from the beginning of the series.

Also, I wonder if the issue of Frank's bisexuality will come up again. It gets hinted at every so often. Perhaps it could come into play in the fight against ICO?

I'm on episode nine. It's... intense. Frank is so hard to read. This is a good thing, though.
