You'll are chatting with a brick wall on this issue. Give it up. The Dems have a scarlet letter than can never be erased. It will last until the supernova consumes are planet. And no matter what the Pubs do, they are the party of Lincoln, and thus no matter how disdained they are by folks of color due to a wing of their party being challenged on that front, they have a get out of jail card for the same period. there is nothing more to be said, so please don't say anything more. It would be redundant. Thanks.

not sure if serious...

It's only flaw it that it had a typo, which I have now corrected. Thanks.

So the GOP could support segregation tomorrow and would have a "get out of jail free card" because of Lincoln?

Your reading comprehension skills do appear to be above average.  I have also decided to take over this thread. I really can do it so much better, and that's a fact. The thing is to get the facts right, and then everything else is opinion. Thanks.

What one feels or does personally, often, has little impact on what one is prepared to do to get elected. You want to tell yourself that the GOP has not become an expert in code-language to comfort their increasingly paranoid white base... go right ahead, you'll continue to be very very wrong.

If you don't think the 1968 Southern Strategy was not about appealing to 'traditional' Southerners who had felt abandoned by the Dems shift on Civil Rights since 1962... then your bubble clearly has some mighty-thick walls.

Gee... I wonder what might have happened before the 1964 election to cause this shift?

But it was only for that election.  The truth is, the GOP was already making gains in the South, and there were plenty of non-race-related factors in thay.

Yea re-reading it now it's was pretty obvious.

In my defense, I was a bit polished off yesterday so perhaps my sarcasm detector was off. That's embarrassing.

Being the philo-Semite I am, probably Hasidic.  I would say hipster since I probably fit that category in some ways but that term reminds me of some of the more recent portrayals of Ronald McDonald acting like one in McDonald's ads, and Ronald McDonald has creeped me out ever since I was a young child.

I'm not sure what this is but it probably goes here.

Oldies seems to have an art for putting as much ridiculousness into two sentences as it would take other posters several paragraphs to accomplish.

He was a slaveholder and not a member of the Republican party (such a thing did exist back then, but hardly as a vehicle of anti-slavery activists, and it now contains "Democratic-" suffix added by historians later). My guess anyway.

Oldiesfreak has his own thread, put that quote there.

I read a book once that mentioned how Ronald McDonald has been portrayed as a "basketball-playing hipster" in some McDonald's advertising, and ever since I have associated the term "hipster" with Ronald McDonald, who has creeped me out ever since I was a young child.

A little bit.  It's an awesome show, especially since many of the same people who worked on it also worked on MLAATR.

On if drug users should be thrown behind bars:

But it was only for that election.  The truth is, the GOP was already making gains in the South, and there were plenty of non-race-related factors in thay.

A few relevant points in Oldies' defense:
1.  Nixon was the inventor of affirmative action, implementing it in the Washington DC construction trade.
2. Nixon fully implemented the 1964 Civil Rights Act.  When Nixon entered office, 68% of black children attended all black shcools.  When Nixon left, that number was down to 8%.
http://hnn.us/articles/5331.html
3. Nixon's "Southern Strategy" of "code words" like "tough-on-crime" was very similar to the NAACP's stance on crime in the 60's.  In 1968, the NAACP advocated a tough-on-crime position with tough mandatory prison sentences for violent criminals, including 5 years for muggings, 15 years for rapists, and 30 years for murderers.

Did racists shift to the GOP?  To some extent, yes.  But that took time.  Remember that Carter won the Deep South like Nixon did in '72.  Did that make Carter a racist?  Certainly not in liberals' eyes.  I would say that racists shifted to the GOP, along with the rest of White Southerners, in the '90s and early 2000's, and finished after the 2008 primaries, where Hilary Clinton was rejected, and the many racist White Democrats in KY/WV/AR left the party, possibly for good.

I have no idea; this might depend on Zell Miller's positions on economic issues.  He's one of the few Democrats I like, so I might actually vote for him.
