The year is 1916...
As war has continued to ravage Europe over the last two years, the debate over American involvement in it has become a dominant political issues across the Atlantic. Under President La Follette, America has maintained a strictly isolationist stance, much to the chagrin of the pro-war crowd. Ironically, it is La Follette's own party that has nominated for President, Former President Theodore Roosevelt, a proud proponent of American involvement. As well, the Republicans are running on a platform celebrating the last sixteen years under Roosevelt and La Follette's domestic policy, including support for universal suffrage, an amendment that passed in 1913, and for a number of the other reforms Republicans have managed, including the Federal Reserve and the income tax.

Meanwhile, the Democrats, the traditionally anti-imperialist party, have nominated their former Speaker, House Minority Leader Champ Clark. Clark, a classic Jeffersonian rural Democrat, is championing the shutting down of the Federal Reserve, referring to it as "the tool of Eastern bankers". As well, he strongly opposes intervention in the war in Europe. Also on the Democratic platform is the traditional call for lower tariffs and the like.

The Socialists, having gotten progressively nearer to the presidency the last three years (despite actually declining in popular vote totals), are nonetheless without their champion Eugene Debs. In his place they've nominated Socialist Party Chairman James Hudson Maurer for President on their traditional platform. They of course oppose the idea of a "capitalist war" and such.

Finally, it looks like the Prohibition Party may make a return to its previous glory, circa 1900. Industrialist Henry Ford of Michigan, the owner of the Ford Motor Company and their prestigious "Tin Lizzy". While Ford had supporters pushing him towards the nomination of not only the Prohibition Party, but also of the Democrats and the Republicans, only the Prohibition Party nominated him. While the party has its own platform including the traditional opposition to drinking of alcohol and such, Ford's own personality have taken control of the ship. While he's given token support to their platform, it is his own ideas that are dominating the party's public face. He ardently opposes intervention in the war in Europe. As well, being an industrialist, he favors traditionally Republican levels of tariffs, and is championing his own labor philosophy of welfare capitalism. While many voters are unsure of whether he is merely advocating others adopt his philosophy, or that he will be actively enforcing them, it still sound quite nice. Ford is a successful industrialist and it may be his own success story and business prowess that rocket him to the presidency, even as Prohibition's nominee.

I think this is the first time in a while that I actually voted the same way someone of my demographic background would have voted. I have German ancestry, actually my grandparents were born in Germany and them and my mom speak German fluently, so I imagine someone like me would be fiercely opposed to the war.

Maybe some of the Republican votes in the 19th century were realistic too, but even then I mostly voted Populist/Greenback/whatever during that time period.

Anyway, the swing to the Socialists in Wisconsin should be huge Wink

Ford'll go crazy soon enough, so him. Actually, Ford may lead us joining the Axis or something (he went very crazy. You'll want to dispose by 1920.)

Remember guys, you dont want WWI go the way it did, unless you also want WWII. So vote for the socialist ticket, we need worldwide revolution, don't make the worker fight the capitalist war.
