Thought I'd make a spin off of the Democratic thread, here a few things that could cause some clash between candidates:

-Foreign policy (McCains of the party vs. the Huntsmans)
-Immigration (Rubio vs I dunno.. majority of the party)
-The culture wars (gay marriage, abortion, ect)

How far to go with respect to conservative rhetoric on social issues. Some prefer the Romney approach (i.e., tolerant conservatism that tries to steer clear of the hot button issues) whereas others want the Santorum Doctrine (i.e., Bible-thumping even if it does more harm than good).

We will not see fights over immigration like last time; Rubio's approach will be embraced. Of course, the foreign policy approach will be "peace through strength."

Foreign policy, most likely.

I doubt the Republicans in 2016 will actually have different positions on same-sex marriage or abortion.

Between the non-Paul candidates? Immigration perhaps. If 1 or 2 strong conservatives emerge to challenge Christie, then an ideological contrast.

If Immigration Reform passes before 2015, and I'm 99% sure it will, then immigration will no longer be an issue, and the only way it can be used as a wedge issue in the primaries would be calling out people who voted for/against it.

Just like how the issue was settled in 1986?

It's a little different when it's been over 20 years, and it's clear the previous reform effort either never worked or isn't working anymore.

The biggest differences will be on the usual GOP standards. They will all agree on tax cuts and spending cuts, but they will have big differences on their various tax cut plans. Look at 2012. They all proposed tax cuts yet sniped at each others plans, especially flat or semi-flat plans vs. progressive plans. Same with spending cuts. some will propose cutting x number of agencies and another y number, etc.

Whoever the opponents of [insert your personal favorite candidate here] happen to be, they are all scum. This will cause the most disagreement.

I suspect culture wars, with immigration tacked on. The current Obama approach of doing imperialism "on the cheap" via drones, allies, and limited deployments will likely go over reasonably well with the large majority of the Republican party. The only reason they complain now is because they're not in charge of it.

On the other hand. I suspect that the culture wars (gay rights and marriage, abortion, hating on foreigners, even some gun control) don't actually matter that much to the wealth-worshipping wing of the party. So they'll be a split between those who really would like to win, and the rank and file for whom ideological purity trumps all. Additionally, that same crowd is convinced that McCain and Romney lost because they "weren't conservative enough" which is likely to motivate them to push even harder for a "true" conservative.

Not the economy or defense of anything like that. The GOP can't engage on that level. It'll be the gays, rape victims and evolution again.
