As Politico puts it, "Paul to embrace sequester, immigrants"

Rubio was pretty good but not quite up to his standards. A little awkward in delivery and with the water grab, and obviously the response was vague and rambling (not that the words matter). Better than McDonnell and leagues ahead of Jindal.

No one cares about Rand.

I think Mitch Daniels had the best one, last year. He made a huge mistake not running in 2012. The Presidency would've been his for the taking.

I cannot describe in words how much Marco Rubio scares me. His speech was excellent; the distortion of facts, the constant half-truths, the warm and fuzzy emotional appeal. If you look into those dark, soulless eyes, it's easy to imagine Senator Rubio in a spiffy black uniform under the stars and stripes (probably with an eagle or a cross added for good measure). Just as the NSDAP started as a few drunk veterans in Munich and Nuremberg, the Tea Party started as a few old men in wigs and petticoats sitting outside the Capitol.

Trolling is trolling.

As for the speech, quite good IMO. Water will become the BFD, just like Kaine's eyebrows and Daniels' pessimism, etc. The nitpick brigade is out in full force.

These responses never really work because of the comparison between the pageantry and ambiance of the SOTU address and some dude giving a speech to a camera.

That said, Rubio was mediocre at best.  His speech was very thin on detail or legitimate argument and high on pathos attacking a strawman socialist policies.  His tone of voice also seemed weird and the water grab is going to be the only thing people remember.  Not good.

True. I was just referring to guys who were perceived as national candidates since Daniels had already declined to run at that point. The nomination was definitely his to be had.

What does this even mean?

I'd love to know what you think wasn't true, it was mostly opinion and subjective appeal.

Because she left him and their children and only came back after he made a bunch of money as an Eli Lilly Executive. And he took her back.

Obama saying that we need an "all of the above" approach to energy, how he's cutting red tape and expediting oil and gas permits on public lands...

Rubio attacking Obama, saying we need to have an "all of the above" approach to energy, including using resources on our public lands...

Etc.

Idk if I'd go that far, but... I caught some of Rubio's response on the radio while driving home, and what kept rolling through my head was Umberto Eco's definition of fascism as "palingenetic ultra-nationalist populism".

Rubio offered nothing more than the tired bromides from the US Chamber of Commerce. The whole GOP appeal these days is that either (1) Barack Obama is the worst thing that ever happened to America, or (2) just leave everything to America's elites and all will go well but if you get $crewed you deserve it.

He failed badly in calling for the protection of "gun rights".

The Nazi/Tea Party analogy is, of course,  far over the top.

I didn't watch any of them, but considering the commentary in this thread Rubio seems to have done well.

Meh. "Better than Jindal" isn't exactly high praise and that's most what I'm hearing. It's true that the water grab is all that'll be remembered out of this, but he had a pretty great comeback on Twitter poking fun at himself.

Rand Paul's delivery was pretty dreadful.  Reminded me a bit of Darrell Hammond's impersonation of Al Gore.

If I hear the GOP yap one more time about "taxes/spending" etc in their speeches, I will vomit.  It's old and tiresome.  Find something else to talk about that we can take seriously.

The water grab has ruined his 2016 chances a little bit, as petty as that sounds.

Why is the GOP response such a poisoned chalice?

Rubio did a very good job, the water grab was awkward yet funny, but come on he wasn't the only akward one last night, I mean, did you see the way Biden was playing with his glasses, I found that amusing as well. But yeah I really do like Rubio, now I was upset that he didn't back the Violence Against Women Act, and I was also mad about his "gay rights should be left to the states" speech, but hey for a tea partier, saying it should be left to the states, isn't a bad start.

I'm not the world's biggest fan of Rubio. To me, he's just an upstart young Republican who embodies most of the personal traits of Obama that I've never liked. Rubio seems to be better at the schmoozing, and we'll see how immigration reform turns out, but I'm actually not that impressed with the field of potential presidents we have for 2006. I mean, we have some good candidates, but that does not a good president make.

I agree 100%.

I actually liked a lot of parts of Rand Paul's speech. His delivery is typical Rand Paul blech, but I like most of his points on the sequester and spending. Of course it's also filled with trite talk of "freedom", but still.

Any one who focuses on the water grab is part of the problem in politics- we need to focus less on style then substance. Sadly, there didn't seem to be much substance in Rubio's speech...
