I fail to see how Jim DeMint is worse than Strom Thurmond or the people who voted to secede from the Union; or how Ron Johnson is worse than Joe McCarthy.

This.

Basically the entire South has to be represented by 1860s senators.

While Johnson sucks, he's no Joseph McCarthy.

The SF novel The Man in the High Castle has Bricker (OH) as the President of the United States as it falls to the Third Reich in an alternative history.

I do not see how Il Senator Fitzgerald is considered bad.  He was railroaded by his own party for not towing their line.  He never was much of a politician at heart.
I believe that Carol Moseley Braun should be rated worst as she had so much potential, but frittered it away.  Her post Senatorial career including her run for Mayor of Chicago is just dreadful.

She was confirmed in an affirmative vote to be ambassador by the U.S. Senate. Fitzgerald on the other hand came in on good will on the backs on impeachment of Bill Clinton. He got voted out because he opposed the O'Hare expansion, that both parties agreed to.

If anything, the impeachment of Clinton helped Democrats, not Republicans.  Fitzgerald won because Carol Moseley-Braun was a crook, and he retired after one term.  And what's the deal with Hayakawa?
